Default Pass happy, Whisenhunt led Steeler O... YUCK!!!

I made a thread on here before discussing the pass happy play calling of Kenny Whisenhunt. Becoming an offense built around passing first doesnt make a whole lot of sense.

We simply do not have the personnel on the offensive side of the football to make the pass our #1 priority.

Position Main reason that passy happy O wont work
QB When he attempts around 20 passes...... we win
When he attempts around 30 passes...... we lose nearly 85% of the time

WR Our WR's strengths are blocking and precise route running
They are not burners whose physical abilities scare opposing D's
A gritty group more suited for reliable play than excellent play

OLine Alan Faneca is the best LG in the NFL.... on running plays
He isnt close to being the best pass blocking G
Our running scheme is unmatched (only Denver is close)

Run the football Kenny!!!!!!!!!
Someone needs to remind the Whiz that he DIDNT take the Oakland job
Quit calling these passing plays, especially on 1st down, as if Al Davis himself is sitting on your lap in the booth.

Come on Steelers ..... lets go ram it down SD's throat this sunday ....... lets remind the whole NFL what we are all about...... pounding the rock...... controlling the clock .... and knocking people's heads off

In that kinda game....... we are the best in the league......... period

Another interesting stat

Steelers are 0-5 in during the Big Ben era when he throws 30 or more passes

While I agree we should be a run-oriented team, I don't think there are too many LG's who could fill in at LT, the most IMPORTANT pass-blocking spot on the line.

point well taken stillers#1..... I am not trying to take anything away from good ol #66, but it is a simple fact that run blocking is the strength of our O line..... the personnel of our team (both O and D) is built around the run..... Kenny Whisenhunt needs to play to our strengths not our deficiencies.

That is why I am a fan of the play action pass cause the blocking is somewhat like run blocking not the same but closer than say if they line up in the shotgun. Correct me if I am wrong but I think this plays back into what we are good at. plus the play action sets up like many plays we run that are both straight pass plays and run plays. I also think Ben throws better under center than out of the shotgun just a thought dont have stats on that

right or wrong

he threw a ton out of the gun at Miami (OH).... the MAC, however, is a bit different from the NFL.

I do agree with your thoughts on play action and I would say that anyone who thinks Ben's career hasnt been significantly helped by a powerful runninig game and fantastic play action passing ability ....... well then, they just havent been payinig attention the last two seasons.

When the coaches ask Ben to let his abilities compliment a powerful running attack.... he wins games so often the only QB's to compare him to are guys that played without facemasks!!!!

he is 27-4 when he compliments an O

we are 0-2 with him attempting to carry the O

Dont blame it all on Ben though, he doesnt call the plays. If the play calling stays the same Ben must execute close to near perfect.

To put it simply..... I think Whisenhunt is asking too much of his young QB.

Hell, Rivers is gonna start the 4th game of his career this Sunday.... he is a year older than Ben. Slow down Whiz.... Ben is still a young professional enduring the learning process.

i dont think that is that big of a deal when you state how many times he throws, put it this way we still run the ball 35 times a game, the no huttle offense is going agianst our priority and that is waisting time.

I don't agree with these posts. While I agree that we need to still have the run as #1 priority, to say that we should go into SD trying only to run the ball is absurd. Last year they were great against the run, not so good pass defense. Also coachspeak, your claim that ben is 0-2 as the focal point of the offense is equally erroneous. In Indianapolis and Denver last year, we hardly ever ran the ball and won by passing the ball. Also your stats in regard to the 30 attemps are scewed and not exactly representative because we are often behind in those games, naturally lending ourselves to losing those games. Games in which we are ahead a lot by passing a lot (Indy, Cincy, Denver) we end up running just to seal the deal and run out the clock. Number of attempts does not correlate exactly with passing efficiency. So coachspeak33, I think you're wrong on this one. The pass needs to be an increasingly important part of our offense this year.

Yes and no. No if we are throwing picks yes if we are makeing first downs. We need to run to win!!!
