Default Joey Porter ESPN.com Interview

Do not believe this interview with Porter has been linked/posted yet

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/s...t&lid=tab1pos2

Fairly mundane jock talk about Peezey playing dominoes/need for this year's team to finish games, etc. until the contract issue comes up at the end:

What would you command on the open market?

Porter: Something that's fair value, where I'm supposed to be paid at -- top three money at my position. I have to wait until I get there, though.

I do not believe any team will be paying Porter as one of the top 3 OLBs for his next contract, but I know the Steelers will not be paying that kind of $$.

Since my understanding is that next year is the last year of Porter's contract he will need to decide if he holds back to avoid injury or leaves it all out there to try to impress another team.

great interview. i happen to think joey is still top 3 at his position. will he be in 3-5 years? probably not.

what i liked best about the interview was him taking the credit for bens struggles. the defense has blamed themselves, the o-line has blamed themselves, the wr's have blamed themself, and ben has blamed himself.

it seems like every member of the steelers would rather shoulder the blame for their 3 game slide, than to let it fall onto one of their teammates.

joey is the man. i hate to see him go but think he has earned any $$$ he can get on the open market.

Well said on all counts.

I'm not going to say Joey can be easily replaced. But the bedrock of the Steelers system has been making sure that of the 22 starters on offense and defense, 16-18 of those starters can be replaced with ease. And those last 4-6 can still be replaced, it just won't be as easy.

But take a second and look at the talent coming out next season at OLB in the draft:

1. Paul Posluzny (PSU)
2. H.B. Blades (Pitt)
3. Xavier Adibi (VT)
4. Earl Everett (Florida)
5. Prescott Burgess (Michigan)

That's some serious talent at OLB. Losing Joey would hurt, but assuming Chad sticks around one more year, we could break in a rookie like Blades. I don't want to see us do it, but we can if we have to.

i forgot to add that if theres 1 thing joey has shown me, he is not the type to hot dog it. dude only knows 1 speed and will give it his all. these same questions arose before the 1st game of the season and he promptly went out and had 2 sacks an an int for a td. teams will game plan to stop him (which probably helps to explain why 3 other linebackers on the steelers have int's to this point.)

joey has way to much pride to half step it. even though hes the leader, his teammates wouldnt allow it and he wouldnt want to let them down anyways.

there is a rumor going around that the steelers are tight with their money.....haha.. but when we say tight it gives people the wrong idea. our lineman get paid what they deserve, someone like faneca gets paid in a 6 yr 40mil contract or so, but someone like starks gets paid in a contract like 3yr 5mil or so. ben got resigned to a 40 mil contract,we have 2-3 lineman that have a 30mil contract or bigger. and ward has a 30mil contract. we give our players good money but we spread the money out differently than other teams. we dont give 1st round picks the same amount of money as a 5 yr vet, like reggie bush, vince young, and mario williams. because in the draft guys can be misleading....kind of like how mario williams is a fluke, so why should you give him 60 mil?
