Ben is going to play unless Cowher sits him - Cowher needs to sit him but Cowher has gone from player's coach to player's pal this year (and after watching it on NFL Replay last night since I did not catch it while at the game on Sunday, that grin session with Vick after Vick ran for a crucial first down did not bring any grins to my face) - I guess Cowher wants a big turnout at the going away party when he heads to North Carolina at the end of this year.

Hopefully Ben will not be attending that get together in a wheelchair.

OH! you said it. I am not sure I could handle another day like last week, Big Ben either!!
If he must play, which I am almost certain he will(knowin Big Ben) I just pray that he is very careful. I don't have a good feeling about this.

hopefully the OL steps it up and makes it a priority to protect him on Sunday. I'll admit that I'm a little nervous because the Raiders are going to be gunning for him big time.

Atlanta Dan, I hate to say it but I think you're right. (BTW, I didn't appreciate Cowher's big grin to Vick either.)

It will be Cowher's choice to sit him because these NFL doctors are idiots. Did I just say that? Here's someone else saying it:
http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/9754944
Quote:
Concussions, it seems, are the NFL's dirty little secret. It's not just that they happen so often, but that the league doesn't seem to be doing much about it.

Sure, the NFL says it has had a committee of doctors studying them since 1994. But experts in the field say the league's studies are flawed, use suspect data, and don't stand up to peer review. So when the NFL says no evidence has been found that brain function declines as a result of a concussion, the news is greeted with skepticism in the medical community.

"What the NFL allegedly finds is totally at odds with scores of publications that are out there," said Dr. Robert Cantu, a neurologist and leading expert in brain injuries at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. "The stuff the NFL is putting out is just not the way the thinking is in the community of sports medicine and specialists with expertise in this area."
We'll see this Sunday where Cowher stands by his choice (regardless of pressure from Ben)....

Considering the fact that I don't think Ben has the maturity (yes I thought he was mature before the crotch rocket incident, but he's just a regular guy) or insight (possibly a result of his motorcycle head injury which can change his perceptions) to stop himself from playing , maybe I should change my call to the Steeler Nation from:
SAVE BEN. PLAY BATCH. to STOP BEN. PLAY BATCH..

i think ben being who he is, ya he wants to play he is a competitor. if the docs clear him then i think he should play. he is a tough guy...reminds me of a steel curtain type of guy, playing hurt, his competitive spirit, and his loyality to the steel city. now if we can just get the rest of the team like this :) steel curtain 2007!

I was watching a report on ESPN yesterday and they were reporting that Cowher is going to wait until Sunday to see how Ben is and whether he will play or not. It seems that Ben did pass the IMPACT test that was given to him Thursday.
However, I believe it was Morten Anderson who said, "The Steelers believe that there is always some sort of drama sorrounding Ben and it is in the best interest of him and the team to get back out on the field." I understand where Mort is coming from and to a degree I do agree with him. It seems that if Ben does get on the field Sunday it will put all of last weekend's and this week's drama behind him and allow him to move forward. On the other hand, at what risk?
I believe that Batch can handle the workload this week and giving Ben another week to rest would benefit not only him but the team coming down the stretch!

I agree that Ben should sit this week out and let Batch do his thing... But I also know that if we have 1 or 2 more losses then our season is over... I'm sure Cowher will make the right decision..

The media hasn't made it very clear that the ImPACT test is only ONE of a series of tools that doctors use to evaluate a player's concussion. One important tool is the actual event. In loss of consciousness with a concussion, then all of medicine (outside of the NFL) has set standards about return-to-play. (In Ben's case, a minimum of 2 weeks is mandated.) I was asked to describe the medical risks in other posts so I won't repeat it all here. Returning Ben too early and subjecting him to another concussion (multiple concussions are cumulative) puts him at GREAT risk for Second-Impact Syndrome which can result in permanent neurological injury and often death.

I have to say I'm tired of the drama too and that's one reason I appreciate Batch even more. IMO he has great leadership potential and now that Bettis is gone, the Steelers need another good role model and good Pittsburgh blue-collar-type guy (like his genuine work with kids and charities). Charlie has stayed in the shadows both on the field and off when lesser men would have used this as an opportunity to put themselves out to the media and say how great they could be. [Hines is a great guy and a world-class player, but he hasn't stepped up in a leadership role like I thought he would (for example, the penalty last week)]

SAVE BEN. START BATCH.
