Default What Is The Core To Rebuild/Reload This Team?

This discussion obviously is open ended, but in terms of what parts of this team are the foundation for the future (since the present sucks), my list includes:

QB - Ben and Batch
RB - everything is up for grabs
OL - Faneca and Smith
WR - Ward and Holmes
TE - Miller

DL- Hampton, Smith and Keisel
LB - Foote, Haggans, and James Harrison (age a concern w/Porter & Farrior)
DB - Troy, Taylor and McFadden

Coaches - Whiz & LeBeau

A lot of this team has been around since 2001; with Cowher going it may be time for a major retool

Starting with a Franchise QB is a good place to start, and Pittsburgh has one.

Obviously the younger talent (Ward, Holmes, Polamalu etc.) are going to be good for the future as well.

Definitely need to do something about the lack of a running game, be it rb's or ol.

I'm with you for the most part Dan. Execpt i feel,....Willie should be included. (We just need to add some "True" talent in regards to "Power" and physicality to share the backfield with him)
And also in terms of Harrison (He's not very much younger than Joey,... and though he's solid,... he's not on Peezy's level)

I think there a good solid core here. Obviously the guys the Steelers have extended longer term contracts to are going to be here. The Steelrs will employ an orderly transition. There will be no radical cleaning of the house.
QB - Ben
RB - Willie
OL - Smith, Starks, Faneca, Kemo, Colon
Receivers - Holmes, Reid, Ward, Miller
DL - Hampton, Smith, Keisel
LBs - Foote, Haggans
DBs - Ike, Polamalu, Mcfadden, Smith

My biggest gripe is the running game. We need a young, big, and powerful back.

Well I think Willie Parker is a keeper. I wish people would lay off. The guy is having a good year. The Oline hasn't been consistent all year and you have to think that defenses do not respect the Steelers passing game so they are focusing on stopping Willie Parker. The Steelers do need a power back for the short yardage role. Dookie isn't that answer there.

About the Oline. The center and the whole right side needs a fix. But the Steelers do have Okobi,Essex and Kemoeatu. So they have some players. Now is the time to find out if these guys are players.

If you question Porter's age then you have to question Haggans as well. Since Haggans is 2 months older then Porter. Check it out if you don't believe me. Haggans was born in Jan. 1977 and Joey was born in March 1977.

I think finding a replacement for LeBeau is important as well. Coach LeBeau is in early 70's now. But Darren Perry would be a fine replacement. Since he has played and coached under LeBeau's system.

Upgrade the OL, particularly the right side, and the running game improves. Guaranteed. This is a team whose passing game feeds off their ability to run effectively - too many times this season, we have been unable to get into any kind of rhythm running the football, which leads to more passes and more pressure on the QB.

Anyone else notice that we have always seemed to have a problem on the right side of the line, particularly RT? Why is that never addressed adequately?
