Young's scoring touch returns, pleases Dixon

Even though he has played 278 fewer minutes than starting power forward Levon Kendall, Young is only five points behind Kendall in scoring.

The only thing that bugs me about this team is that every time they have played a ranked opponent they have lost. Looking at the schedule you couldn't accuse them of stacking it with patsies; they have lots of games against traditional powers that are having off-seasons. Still, only 3 games against ranked opponents; 3 losses.

I agree Tom. At the same time that Wisconsin team is a powerhouse. Damn are they good. Did you watch that game? That is a scary team.

Marquette was a heart breaker. I'm still trying to mentally heal from that game.

Overall and in my opinion, all that matters are the Ides of March.

Oh yeah and once again, Dixon, please play Young over Kendall!!! I can't take it anymore.

Anyone see Sam Young's Dunk? Whoever was the genius bringing him in, pat him on the back.

It's a shame, we should have put them away for good in the first half. And for the life of me I will continue to try and figure out why in the $%&# Jamie Dixon even bothers playing Kendall. He absolutely STINKS.

Collier: Young may be too good for bench
Thursday, February 08, 2007

By Gene Collier, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia's frothing student section spent a chunk of the pregame and some ugly portion of both halves last night yelling at Pitt center Aaron Gray, which was a wholly anticipated part of the typical Pitt-WVU hostilities, except that the kids were yelling the very thing at Gray that, well, how will I put this ...

The thing Joey Porter says when he's not intending to offend anybody except Kellen Winslow.

Yeah, gay slurs were plentiful in this grand old basketball theatre.

Baskets were not.

The Mountaineers got exactly six of 'em the first 30 trips up the floor, burying themselves in a 10-point ditch from which there's just about no way out against a team that plays defense like the Panthers.

The fact that Pitt set an offensive pace only the Slowskys could love, combined with WVU's astonishingly myopic shooting, made for a particularly shaggy night of Big East basketball, but there was one player who managed a completely unaffected style of artistry.

Young Sam Young.

Perhaps it was because the audience couldn't come up with anything vulgar or homophobic to yell at the 6-foot-6 sophomore who seemed to have put Pitt's 21st win in his pocket early in the second half, and perhaps Levon Kendall did Pitt a huge favor by getting into early foul trouble and drawing his third personal soon after halftime to clear the way for Young's 31 minutes. But whatever inspired Young to 21 points, seven rebounds and an absolutely lethal 10-for-14 shooting, it'll have immediate and probably extended repercussions long after a 60-47 Panthers victory.

There's this somehow uncomfortable truth that Pitt's a little better, perhaps a lot better, with Young on the floor and Kendall off it. But when you're 21-3 and 9-1 in the Big East, the time to badger Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon on the matter is simply not at hand.

"[Sam] just hasn't been able to play that much because Levon's been so vital to both our offense and our defense," Gray said. "Plus he's had some trouble with his knee, but tonight he showed what a great player he can be."

It was Young who went so strong along the baseline that he forced home a layup 1-on-3 to put Pitt up, 10-4, in the opening minutes. And it was Young's electrifying rejection of a Da'Sean Butler floater in the lane on the next possession that seemed to demonstrate that Pitt would not be intimidated by the atmosphere or by West Virginia's severely accomplished offense.

"Pitt's got such great chemistry on defense," said West Virginia coach John Beilein. "Very, very good man-to-man defense, as you can see by our 47 points."

The Mountaineers walked onto the floor averaging and fully expecting better than 10 3-point field goals per performance. Last night they got six, none until Butler buried one with nearly nine minutes elapsed.

With 3:47 left in the half, the Mountaineers had exactly four field goals. Awful as it was, it was nothing to be embarrassed about. Even the third-most prolific 3-ball shooting team in America got itself marginalized by Pitt, a thoroughly common outcome.

With the 6-for-27 show from beyond the arc last night, the past four Pitt opponents are now 19 for 88 from 3-point range, which is less than 22 percent.

For all that habitually desperate defense, Pitt likely would be dealing with a fourth loss this morning without Young, who scored 10 consecutive Panthers points to stretch a 10-point halftime lead to 39-26. And when Ronald Ramon finally got around to throwing home some 3-pointers, Pitt was able to swell it to 46-29.

"Last year, [Young] played very well against the Mountaineers; the matchups were good," Dixon said. "I felt he'd play very well tonight. He's been practicing hard. You get what you earn. He's a sophomore who just keeps getting better and better."

West Virginia was simply a little too talented offensively to go meekly into the night, though. Leading scorer Frank Young, 0 for 6 in the first half, made a layup that sliced Pitt's lead to 49-45, but just as the old Coliseum was ready to burst in anticipation of a monumental comeback, Graves found Young alone -- alone? -- along the far left baseline.

Money.

Sam Young made himself very, very topical last night.

Pitt beats Providence 74-68. It was a battle as expected but we came out on top. Nice win. Up next, Louisville on Monday.
