Default Harris: Q&A with Hines Ward

Harris: Q&A with Hines Ward

By John Harris
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sunday, November 5, 2006

Hines Ward is the Steelers' career receptions leader with 608. He's also second all-time in receiving yards with 7,489 and touchdown catches with 57. Ward has led the Steelers in receiving seven consecutive years (he tied Troy Edwards with 61 catches in 1999) and currently leads the team in receptions (34), yards (459) and touchdown catches (five). Last year's Super Bowl MVP, Ward believes the Steelers can rebound from their surprising 2-5 start in 2006 beginning with today's 4:15 p.m. game against the Denver Broncos at Heinz Field.

Q: What do the Steelers need to do to turn things around?

A: We can't fumble the ball; we can't turn the ball over. We have to all go out and play better. Until it gets rectified, we're going to continue to lose ballgames. We don't try to turn the ball over. Things happen. Everybody can improve. Nobody's playing perfect right now. We've all got to get on the same page and find a way to rectify this.

Q: The Steelers need to get hot if they want to make the playoffs. Is the team capable of going on a long winning streak considering the way the season has gone so far?

A: I don't look at the big picture. I just want to win. The thing is to beat the Denver Broncos, and that's all that matters. Throw out whoever's in the lead. We've just got to beat the Denver Broncos. That's our main focus.

Q: What's been the biggest difference this season in the Steelers losing close games after winning the majority of them last season?

A: We didn't become a bad team overnight. A lot of teams are right there in it, but there comes a play, and it seems like this year we're not coming up with those plays.

Q: You and Denver cornerback Champ Bailey go all the way back to your playing days together at the University of Georgia. How does he rank among the top cornerbacks in the league?

A: Champ's a great cornerback, but we can't really worry about Champ. We have to worry about what we can do. He has ball skills. You throw it over there, he's like a receiver playing cornerback. They say the difference between cornerbacks and receivers is cornerbacks can't catch. He can catch. He's a great student of the game. I've played against him since college. We've had our battles. He's still one of the better corners in the league. I brought him into Georgia. I'm kind of like a big brother to him. He wanted to play both ways, so he's always trying to learn to play wide receiver. He kind of knows what we're thinking at times. It makes it even harder.

A: We.......I can't fumble the ball...........especially when trying to do a dumbass dive into the endzone.
