Default Student project sparks terrorism fear at Heinz Field

Student project sparks terrorism fear at Heinz Field
Sunday, November 05, 2006

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Security will be heightened at Heinz Field today for the Steelers--Denver Broncos game after two Carnegie Mellon University students were arrested as they tried to sneak into the stadium overnight.

Pittsburgh police Chief Nate Harper said stadium security officers stopped the two men, described as U.S. citizens of Indian descent, as one stood on a chair and attempted to scale a wall near Gate B about 2 this morning.

With rumors of potential terrorism at NFL games fresh in their minds, Pittsburgh police called in the Joint Terrorism Task Force, made up of city and county police, the FBI and the county sheriff's office.

Police said a video camera was found in the vehicle that one of the men drove to the stadium, and they believe the two planned to finish filming a music video for a college project.

Bomb-sniffing dogs searched the whole stadium, Chief Harper said, but found no explosives.

The men were charged with criminal trespassing and conspiracy. Police said one of the men is 21 years old and is from New York, and the other is 20 and from California. Both live in the Squirrel Hill

area, off campus, Chief Harper said.

Police said stadium security will be ramped up despite the fact that they believe no terrorist acts were planned. They said more officers and a complement of police dogs will greet fans for the 4:15 p.m. game. Chief Harper added, however, that security checks won't be so severe that ticket holders should arrive early.

Yay, this only means one thing. A more thorough cavity search. I'm not taking Mr. Harper's word for it. Leaving early today.

I wonder if they would have taken the same precautions if they hadn't been of "Indian decent"?

"With rumors of potential terrorism at NFL games fresh in their minds,"

I think that pretty much sums it up.

Yes. These are people who paid to be paranoid. They could have had 'staches and mulletts and they would have gotten jacked up.

They probably would, but it wouldn't be as played up as it is now

IMO, I don't care if your green, brown, red, black, orange or yellow. If your climbing over the Heinz Field gates at 2:00 in the morning on game day after reports of terrorist threats on certain NFL stadiums, it's going to make the headlines.

If anything, there was a little piece in the PPG. It's not as if they are running it on every Pittsburgh news station with "BREAKING NEWS" attached to the story title.

I dont care if they are of Martian descent..we have enough home grown terrorists to validate any thoughts or precautions law enforcement deems necessary. I dont think authorities are overreacting at all in this case....you can check my coat, check my pockets and check my "package"....the better you check me when I go in...the more secure I feel knowing that everyone sitting next to me was checked just as thouroughly....with my main concern only being how often they changed latex gloves.
