Default Game 8 Report Card: Steelers vs. Broncos

Game 8 Report Card: Steelers vs. Broncos
Monday, November 06, 2006

STEELERS VS. BRONCOS

GERRY DULAC grades the Steelers' effort in the 31-20 loss against the Denver Broncos yesterday. The report is broken down into defensive and offensive positions and coaching.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

QUARTERBACK: Ben Roethlisberger had career highs for attempts (54), completions (38) and yards (433) and did a good job bringing the team back from a 14-0 deficit. But he threw three more interceptions, bringing his season total to 14, and was sacked four times, despite few blitzes and only three-man rushes.
GRADE: B

RUNNING BACK: Willie Parker combined for 137 yards -- 70 rushing, 67 receiving -- and scored two touchdowns. But he failed to rush for more than 100 yards for the first time at home this season. Najeh Davenport did a good job in his first third-down role, catching five passes for 57 yards and carrying two times for 17 yards.
GRADE: B

RECEIVERS: Hines Ward has been one of the few brights spots during a three-game losing streak. He had seven catches for 127 yards, including a 63-yard catch and run to set up a field goal, and also delivered several big blocks. But he did fumble near the goal line when he tried to dive into the end zone with 1:50 remaining. Cedrick Wilson made a nice play on fourth-and-2 to gain 35 yards to the Denver 6, but he fumbled and the Broncos recovered when it was 14-0.
GRADE: B

OFFENSIVE LINE: The Broncos rushed no more than four players, usually dropping seven or eight guys in coverage, and still Roethlisberger was sacked four times and faced a lot of pressure. RT Max Starks had trouble on pass protection with DE Elvis Dumervil, who had a sack. RG Kendall Simmons had a false-start penalty and gave up a sack on back-to-back plays in the fourth quarter, forcing the team to settle for a field goal.
GRADE: D+

DEFENSIVE LINE: The Broncos had 115 yards rushing on 23 attempts, but that's because WR Javon Walker ran 72 yards for a touchdown on a reverse in the third quarter. Otherwise, their running backs had just 37 yards on 20 carries. DE Aaron Smith had the only sack and also deflected a pass.
GRADE: B-

LINEBACKERS: With a mistake-prone quarterback such as Jake Plummer, the Steelers failed to apply any pressure to create turnovers -- and that's on the linebackers. No sacks or hurries from this unit, and no big plays either. ILB James Farrior had 12 tackles, nine unassisted, but he committed a 15-yard personal-foul penalty after a third-down stop in the third quarter.
GRADE: D+

SECONDARY: It was a bad performance by CB Ike Taylor, who gave up two touchdowns and catches of 38 and 61 yards to Javon Walker. The touchdowns came on the same type of play -- a fade pass to Walker. He wasn't alone. CB Deshea Townsend failed to break up a touchdown in the back of the end zone to Rod Smith and also bobbled an interception that was overturned by replay.
GRADE: D

SPECIAL TEAMS: Sound familiar? Santonio Holmes fumbled a kickoff that led to the Broncos' second touchdown, and also fumbled on a punt return -- his fifth fumble in his past 16 touches on returns. He was yanked from both return units after that. Jeff Reed missed a 41-yard field goal and the kick-coverage unit gave up another long return (53 yards) that was negated because of a holding penalty.
GRADE: D

COACHING: Six more turnovers -- three fumbles, three interceptions -- bring the season total to 24, one more than all of last season. Throw in a few more unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and the Steelers have the appearance of an undisciplined, unfocused team. Everything is out of sync, including the coaching.
GRADE: D

I'll go "F" on the O-line. I could not believe how the Donco's were getting all in Bens business with only four guys coming hard. Denver wasn't even acting like they were blitzing. I once thought the Steelers had the ultimate o-line in football. I guess not right now.

Throw an "F" at the LBs too. I agree with the above comments on Plummer. He is a mistake waiting to happen when pressured. From what I have seen so far, Plummer stood around in the pocket eating popcorn while looking for an open WR.

These are the D's of the team. I have been arguing the same thing in the other threads. Notice BTW... Ben has a B.

He is NOT our problem... The O line is. If they can't block against 3 and 4 rushers, how the heck is Ben supposed to throw the ball against 7 and 8 DB's while being chased by a couple rushers... ESPECIALLY when the rushers SHOULD BE outmanned at the line of scrimmage.

All I can do is shake my head.

I am so happy to see that other people think that the O-line is the problem. People are ready to crucify Ben...but its hard to NOT throw int's when you are consitantly running for your life and cant get any protection to find people. When the protection is upheld...ben throws bullets...when it collapses Ben tries to make plays and one of the 6 or 7 db's steps in front for the pick.
