Default Browns' words no bother to Porter

Thursday, November 16, 2006
By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Joey Porter had not heard that a Cleveland Browns receiver promised to come after the Steelers' "tails" and hadn't heard the Browns were upset the Steelers beat them in Cleveland, 41-0, Christmas Eve.

He did not know that someone on the Browns' coaching staff this week put a color flyer for a commemorative Steelers Super Bowl book in each of his players' lockers. He did not know that the Browns have a photo of Porter tacked up at the podium of their team room, the one from Sports Illustrated where he's flexing his muscles while wearing pads and no shirt: The most-feared player in the NFL issue.

When he finally heard about all that, Porter did not flinch.

"That's their motivation?" Porter wondered. "It is what it is. I mean, I don't know what to say about their motivation, but we're going to be there. We will be there for Sunday, ready for whatever type of war they're ready to go for. We'll definitely be there."

Porter would make no predictions of the outcome this week as he did last week when he promised a victory against the Saints.

"No, I mean this doesn't need a guarantee," Porter said. "They know what it is. We don't too much care for them; obviously, they don't care for us. We'll go down there and see what happens. We're looking forward to it, I know I am."

Cleveland receiver Braylon Edwards said Sunday that, "We're coming after their [tails]. You don't beat somebody, 41-0, at their own house. We're coming for the Steelers, that's point-blank, period."

That prompted a reaction from Steelers receiver Hines Ward.

"If you're worried about that, your mind ain't on this Sunday," Ward said.

"We can't do anything about Christmas Eve. Half of the players who were on that team aren't there anymore. If you're worried about Christmas Eve, then your mind's in the wrong place. You have to worry about this Sunday. You can't worry about what happened last year.

"We're definitely not going up there and saying we own those guys because we beat them, 41-0. We're going out there and saying, hey, they're an improved ballclub and we're playing on the road. It's going to be a tough challenge for us. We have to go up there and try to steal a win up there."

The Steelers have won 11 of the past 12 games against Cleveland, including five in a row, which often makes their only bus trip of the season an enjoyable one.

"It's kind of the next home away from home, I guess." Ward said.

"The two cities are very close. We want to go out there and do whatever it takes to try to win ballgames. There's an at-ease as far as going up there and trying to start out and take the crowd out early and make plays on them."

Linebacker Larry Foote dismissed Edwards' comments as those coming from "a young boy."

"He only played against us one time, so his word don't really stand that much," Foote said. "He ain't even been in this rivalry that long. I lost to Cleveland one time in five years, so us really coming down there ain't really scaring me."

Nor does it scare Porter.

"I don't fear nobody over there on that team," Porter said, "so I don't care who they got talking or what they say, I've just never been afraid of Cleveland."

Remembering other words

Foote remembers former Browns receiver Antonio Bryant saying last year that "I don't think they have one cornerback that can face me man to man."

This came after the Steelers beat the Browns, 34-21, in November, and safety Chris Hope forced him to fumble with a big hit.

"Yeah, we're fired up, but you know trash-talking's trash-talking," said Foote about Edwards' comments.

"We feel the same way he feels. If he's that bold to come out there and say that -- last year Antonio Bryant was saying that and he ended up sleeping in the third quarter.

"He's really calling out our DBs, so that's who he's talking to."

A bad script

Foote, who played at Michigan, predicted a big win for his club against Ohio State Saturday.

"Michigan, 17-3. This year's the year. I really like our defense. I wouldn't be that confident if our defense wasn't that good. When you've got a good defense, everything's possible."

Not a good weekend, then, for the state of Ohio?

"Oh, all day. Saturday, Sunday, all weekend," Foote said.

Honors for Parker

Willie Parker earned the AFC offensive player of the week award for his performance against New Orleans in which he ran for 213 yards and two touchdowns. Parker's total was 5 yards short of the Steelers' record, held by Frenchy Fuqua.

Parker has 10 touchdowns, well on pace to set a Steelers record. Louis Lipps holds their touchdown record with 15 in 1985.

Quick hits

Linebacker Ron Stanley was signed to the practice squad. He was signed to the 53-man roster Saturday and active for the game Sunday against New Orleans. He was released Monday when quarterback Brian St. Pierre was re-signed. ... Center Jeff Hartings (knee) practiced a little, but fullback Dan Kreider (hip) and cornerback Deshea Townsend (ankle) did not. All three are listed as questionable.

At least Hines knows Cleveland is north of Pittsburgh, not "down there".........I always knew he was the brains of the bunch.....

I have a weird feeling about this game. Hopefully the Steelers prove me wrong.

They're coming after OUR tails? ROFL!!! Maybe someone should tell the idiots to stop flapping their yaps and get down to watching film, preparing for the matchup on Sunday and get their lard asses out there on the field and make a play or two. Geniuses, aren't they? I'm sure Porter & Co. are just licking their chops.

I like Hines's attitude on this. Nothing is a given...especially this season.
