Default Q&A with Chukky Okobi

Q&A with Chukky Okobi

By John Harris
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sunday, November 19, 2006

The last time Steelers center Chukky Okobi saw any significant playing time was five years ago. Then a second-year center, he started five games for the injured Jeff Hartings.
The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Okobi started the past two games for Hartings, who has been sidelined with a knee injury. Hartings said he wants to play today against the Cleveland Browns. If that occurs, it will mean a likely return to the sideline for Okobi.

Okobi has performed well. Last week, the offensive line helped Willie Parker rush for 213 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-31 win over New Orleans. The previous week, Ben Roethlisberger passed for 433 yards and a touchdown in a loss against Denver.

Okobi's most memorable play may be when he replaced Hartings and led the way on Parker's 25-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter of a 20-13 loss at Oakland.

Question: How did it feel to get back to playing regularly after waiting your turn for so long?

Answer: Obviously, I haven't been in there much the last couple of years. I'm not a new guy. I've been around. This is year six. The plays are old to me and the system is old to me. I'm not uncomfortable. I'm comfortable in the system. Obviously, hopefully, a lot of people who maybe didn't know I could play, now they know.

Q: How would you rate the performance of the offensive line with you at center?

A: We're out there just doing our job. That's what we're all getting paid to do. Jeff (Hartings) should be coming back pretty soon, so that's going to definitely help us in terms of depth, whether he's in there or I'm in there. We've been in pretty good shape the last couple of weeks.

Q: Willie Parker had a career day against New Orleans. How much personal satisfaction do you take from his peformance?

A: He's a gamebreaker. We've known that since day one. We knew that before you guys knew that. He's out there doing what he does. We do our job and he does his part, and we make beautiful music together.

Q: Speaking of music, the word is you're a pretty fair rapper. Do you enjoy it?

A: I make some music, but all that stuff's really pretty much on hold right now. I got a day job. Yeah, I've recorded some stuff. It's just a hobby. I'm not trying to become the next big thing. It's just fun. I've been doing it since I was a teenager in high school. I love hip-hop music.

Q: What do you think about the Cleveland Browns defense?

A: They've got a lot of new faces since last year. Their defense is a lot better than they were last year. They're running the same scheme. The scheme's the same, with better players running it.
