Default Game 11 Matchup: Steelers vs. Ravens

Gerry Dulac breaks down the do-or-die game in Baltimore

Game plan

What the Steelers will do: They know by now what the Ravens will try to do -- stuff the running game and force them to pass. Lately, though, that is when Ben Roethlisberger has been most productive. In three of his past four games, he has passed for 561 of his 1,006 yards in the fourth quarter alone. What's more, he is more effective against man coverage, something the Ravens like to play. Roethlisberger, though, has thrown 17 INTs and the Ravens (18 INTs) feast on quarterbacks who make mistakes.

What the Ravens will do: RB Jamal Lewis has never regained the form he had in 2003 (2,006 yards), but he looks better than a year ago. Lewis, though, is no longer the focus of the offense. QB Steve McNair (10 TDs, 9 INTs) has done a good job dispersing the ball to Mark Clayton (46 catches), Todd Heap (44) and Derrick Mason (42). Since Brian Billick took over as offensive coordinator, McNair has been used on more half-rolls and bootlegs to escape pressure and create time. The Ravens are second in the AFC in run defense (82.1 ypg) and will use tackles Kelly Gregg and rookie Haloti Ngata to stuff the middle and force the flow to their outside quickness.

Ravens DE Adalius Thomas: On the depth chart, Thomas is listed as an outside linebacker, but, at 6 feet 2, 270 pounds, he does just about everything and has lined up everywhere in the Ravens' defense. Thomas, tied for third in the AFC with eight sacks, will sometimes line up as a defensive end in a four-man front. But he will drop into coverage and run with backs and tight ends. Thomas has one interception and four passes defensed this season, and is the only player in franchise history to record a sack, interception and safety in the same game (vs. Oakland, Sept. 17).

Intangibles

The Steelers have won two in a row and are coming off a game in which they came back from three 10-point deficits. Bill Cowher has challenged his players to play their most complete game. If the resolve they showed in Cleveland is an indication they still possess a special quality, they will win. If not, their season will end sooner than anyone expected.

Keys to victory

To win, the Ravens must ...

1. Use Air McNair. It has been proven all season -- the way to beat the Steelers is with turnovers or big pass plays.

2. Clock Big Ben. The Steelers did a good job in pass protection a week ago, allowing Roethlisberger the time to find his secondary receivers.

3. Not let Willie get silly. Parker has a chance to break some long runs against an aggressive Ravens defense that will run-blitz at the line.

To win, the Steelers must ...

1. Protect the pig. The Ravens lead the AFC with 26 takeaways. The Steelers lead the NFL with 27 giveaways.

2. Get a bead on Reed. Ravens S Ed Reed is the best playmaking safety in the league, and Roethlisberger always will have to account for him.

3. Put the club on Sams. Their penchant for allowing big returns at the wrong moment could haunt them again with return specialist B.J. Sams.

Ben will have to have a big game today if we are to beat the Ravens. Their run defense is very strong it reminds me of ours. The Ravens have the biggest playmaker in the league IMO.. in #20 Ed Reed. He makes plays every game and between him and Troy there is not 2 better in the league than these 2 playmakers. Look for a very hard hitting game today and a low scoring game.
Steelers 16
