Default What awaits Steelers in Latrobe should be predictably irresistible

What awaits Steelers in Latrobe should be predictably irresistible

TRIBUNE-REVIEW

Very soon now, the Steelers will get back into the football business.

They're down to one day and counting until it's time to show up in Latrobe.

A couple of their NFL counterparts already have reported for work, and soon enough everyone's primary concern will be throwing and catching, and blocking and tackling.

Those who follow the game with a passion will still be subject to distraction.

The opening of camps league-wide won't completely insulate the faithful from being inundated with analysis and insight detailing who wants more money, who intends to hold out if he doesn't get it, which quarterbacks are riding motorcycles without helmets, anything that has anything to do with T.O., and the soap opera that is the saga of the homeless guy who used to be Ricky Williams.

But that stuff will be easier to get past once the actual hitting begins.

What passes for news in the offseason fades into obscurity, at least temporarily, while the game is being played.

Thankfully, the Steelers are about to start playing it again, and our attention can be appropriately shifted in anticipation of:

# A grueling conditioning test that intimidates rookies and gets the attention of veterans months before it's conducted (it's coming this year on Monday).

# Goal-line drills pitting the first-team offense against the first-team defense and featuring the type of live contact during which reputations can be made (ask Kendrell Bell).

# Head coach Bill Cowher calling an impromptu halt to an afternoon practice and letting his players have it within full view and partial earshot of the St. Vincent College spectators, either because his players deserve it or because Cowher has simply decided it's time for such a premeditated tactic.

# Two-minute and red-zone drills that, like the goal-line confrontations, foster competition between the offense and defense as a method of honing each unit to a razor's edge.

# A much-anticipated newcomer living up to his advanced billing and then some with a jaw-dropping act of athleticism (Ben Roethlisberger took care of that last summer with an expert play-fake, a nimble rollout and an on-the-run rocket launched to Zamir Cobb).

# A veteran getting mad and then getting even (cornerback Chad Scott may be gone, but the interception-fest he orchestrated after getting beat deep a few years back by Joey Getherall won't soon be forgotten).

# Somebody coming out of nowhere to make the team (the next Willie Parker, if there is one this summer, will have his chance, starting on Monday).

# A potentially devastating injury that will force the Steelers to adapt and overcome somehow, or suffer the consequences (a particular concern this summer considering the perceived lack of depth).

All that and more is in store at Camp Cowher.

No matter what takes place, it'll have been well worth the wait.
