Default Football board games from the past; Paydirt! and BowlBound!

Did anyone ever play these? I played them incessantly in college and right after; we had leagues and tournaments, we bought the new charts every year, we played teams from different years against each other. The new electronic games are almost too complicated to be any fun; these games were like a complicated version of rock-scissors-paper with an element of risk thrown into the result.

Nope. I don't have the games any more. They were amazing in how they felt, how the games played out. And it was cool to play teams from different years against each other. The '76 Steelers against the '78 Steelers, for example.

that does sound cool. and, it seems like something you couldn't begin to recreate in a video game. i've tried playing 91 pens vs 2001 pens...just ain't the same. the guys can't get the game play close enough to make the stats from different eras anywhere near effective and/or accurate. oh well...i'll have to check into seeing if i could get a hold of one for a 'test run' or something.

I, too, was a HUGE fan of the Paydirt boardgame. Nothing like the '78 Steelers defense! I played the game constantly while in middle and high school. Now that I develop software as a profession I decided to develop a PC version of Paydirt, and I also created software tools to collect play by play data from NFL.com and use this data to create charts for the current teams.

If you have any questions about the boardgame feel free to email, or visit my website:
www.datadrivenfootball.com

There is Paydirt Yahoo! Group with ~700 members so this game has stood the test of time!

Best Regards,

I made up a dice football game based on player stats when I was in high school. We had a lot of fun with it.

Tecmo Bowl was good too--cartoonish, but the gameplay wasn't bad. There are emulators out there that let you play old video games on your PC. Temco enthusiasts hacked the game so you can use current players instead of the originals.
