Default Dick Hoak is going to retire

the running backs coach has spent 45 years with the steelers, and coached alot of good backs and has a total of 5 super bowl rings.

just heard on sirius that a press conference is scheduled for later for the announcement.

i cant help but to be a little bummed about the end of an era.

Steelers running back coach Hoak to retire
Monday, January 01, 2007

By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Dick Hoak, who spent 45 years as a Steelers player and an assistant coach, will retire on Tuesday.

Hoak, 67, was a running back with the Steelers from 1961 through 1970. Chuck Noll hired him to coach his running backs in 1971 and he has remained in that job ever since. He was the only coach from Noll's staff that Bill Cowher kept when he became the new Steelers coach in 1992.

Hoak, a native of Jeannette, played quarterback and running back at Penn State.

I wonder if he was just sticking around with Cowher?

I bring up Hoaks name all the time here, he is Mr.Steelers to me. Most coaches dont get the oppurtunity to stay with a team after a HC change, and he stayed through 4

I gotta say this saddens me quite a bit. Whoever takes over that roll has very very large shoes to fill.

I wish Dick the best in his retirement. Thanks for all the years. You'll be missed.

Best of luck Coach Hoak, a legend as a coach and player for the Steelers. His daughter went to OSU with a buddy of mine got to meet him at there graduation. A real nice guy too.

Good luck to Coach Hoak - as further confirmation of how old I am, I saw him play as a Steeler at Pitt Stadium. His career as RB coach since the 70s is another indication of the consistency and loyalty that makes the Steelers such a great franchise.

And having 5 SB rings puts Coach Hoak in a select group. With regard to that distinction, as Bum Phillips said about Earl Campbell, he may not be in a class of his own but it does not take long to call the roll.

Not that we need further indications, but this is further evidence we are getting a new HC.

I just hope Cowher does not string this out for several weeks.

Its going to be weird not having Dick Hoak as our RB's coach next year. Hoak along with the Bus played a part in the development of Willie Parker.
