nice PC title to the thread. doh! . the rooney rule doesnt state you cant know who you are going to hire before you conduct interviews. if grimm has been groomed to be cowhers successor for the past 5 years, how could they NOT know? look at it like prince charles in england. once queen elizabeth dies, he will be king. his son is beeing groomed to replace him. everybody knows this will happen.

what the rooney rule does is gets tomlins foot in the door. the rooneys and richardson of the panthers are good colleagues. if fox is fired next year you can almost bet they will suggest to him that they put tomlin at the top of the list for an interview if he really did as well as reported. for a young guy, he is learning valuable skills about the process that will help him out further down the road. that is what the rooney rule is designed to do.

Kiesel and Smith are above average DE in the 3-4.... I dont think they would have too much success as pass rushing ends.

The 4-3 relies heavily on the MLB.... Larry Foote is not built to play like Urlacher, Lewis, or Z Thomas..... but he is a highly effective 3-4 LB

Let me put it another way.... How can you do something that is going to cost you Dick Lebeau as your D coordinator?????

Get Grimm and lets focus on the financially driven personnel moves that must be made.

Wouldnt it be nice if those things were done before the draft?
Now, if we switch to a 4-3 defense I agree that there will be alot of change and I dont really think that those guys are really suited for the passrush specialist that we would need. And it will take time to build that kind of a defense up here in Pittsburgh. Now, is the organization willing to wait on that or would they say hey.. you have to stick with what we have right now for a few years until we can get the players that we need to switch? If we were gonna switch to that 4-3 defense then my pick of MLB Patrick Willis of Ole Miss makes more sense than ever.

Some candidates were interviewed beacause they were minorities and the NFL says you have to interview minorities. Even if the Rooney's knew 12 months ago that they wanted Grimm, they would still have to interview a minority. Remeber what happened to the Detroit Lions?

Grimm was not being groomed to be the next HC, the Rooneys stated time and time again that they wanted Cowher to stay for a long long time. Cowher made the decision to leave and there was not a successor waiting in the wings. If Cowher (the only one who knew of his plans to resign) was grooming Grimm on his own, then why did he endorse Chan Gailey instead? I said it before and I'll say it again Mike Tomlin is a legitimate candidate, maybe his skin color got him the first interview, but he got himself the second.

On one hand, I see how Russ would be an ideal candidate who brings a wealth of experience, football knowledge, local appeal, and commands respect already from his players. There's no question he would make a great coach for the Steelers.

On the other hand, how long would he have his edge? Close to 50 starting out as a head coach seems to be against the trend of teams building programs around energetic young coaches. As has been said many times, the Steelers were one of the first to do just that with Cowher all those years ago.

Like the Rooneys said, all 3 of the finalists are worthy of the job. I'm particularly impressed with Tomlin, think he will make a great coach wherever he goes.
