Parker's value rises quickly
Wednesday, August 10, 2005 By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette LOOKING AHEAD Game: Steelers vs. Philadelphia Eagles in preseason opener. When: 8 p.m. Monday. Where: Heinz Field. TV: ESPN. The plastic bracelet on Willie Parker's left wrist was yellow, much like the once-trendy Lance Armstrong bracelet that said "Live strong." This bracelet, though, says "Courage," and Parker confessed to not knowing which cause it was intended to represent. "I just like it," Parker said. More specifically, Parker likes the message the bracelet intones, though courage is not the word most often associated with the second-year running back from North Carolina. Excitement, perhaps. Speed. Even game-breaker. "I want to give the people something to watch, something to see," Parker said. It is a different training camp for Parker, much unlike the one in 2004 when he came in as an undrafted free agent and had to wow the coaches with his 4.28 speed and ability to get around the corner. Now, after a stunning performance in the regular-season finale in Buffalo, Parker is at St. Vincent College in Latrobe as something of a secret weapon, a player who possesses something the other Steelers running backs lack -- breakaway speed and the ability to make big plays. The Steelers had already planned to make more extensive use of Parker (5 feet 10, 209 pounds) in the preseason, but that plan has been altered and expanded with the injury to Duce Staley, who will miss four weeks after having arthroscopic knee surgery. "I think it helps out a little bit more," Parker said. "I think I have another opportunity for them to think about calling my number here's the rest |

Ive been a big Willie parker fan from day one. This kid is exciting, with or w/o our stars in front of him. He needs to get the ball more.

Ive heard some compare him to Amos Z. Amos didnt have near the speed that Parker does. He was good catching the ball, but he just never ran w/ any power at all. For as small as Parker is, he's got some umph when he hits the hole.
