Since it certainly appears to be Tomlin, who will be leaving? (Mods - I do not think this topic goes under the Cowher Successor thread but I am sure you will let me know if I am wrong
)Seems to me Tomlin's impact will initially be more on the defensive side. If they are going to evolve to a 4-3 defense with Cover 2, I doubt LeBeau will hang around. As for Grimm, it is like any other business - when you are passed over for the head job you move on. As for players, I think this increases the odds of Porter being turned loose prior to the 2007 season. With regard to other players, Troy may figure what kept him in Pittsburgh was gettting to free lance in the 3-4. The Steelers presumably still want Troy after 2007, but I wonder if Troy still is as fond of the Steelers? With regard to other high profile players, any thoughts on whether Casey Hampton's talents will be anywhere near as effective in a 4-3? In 1992 it was new coaches for the same players - this change may be a lot more disruptive. |

For all we know Tomlin might be willing to work with LeBeau and learn the 3-4/blitzing scheme. If Tomlin wants to win right away this is what he will do. If not then there will be some tough years for the Steelers as they adjust to the new defense and add the right players over time.

I just saw this over on the Cincinnati Enquirer's site:
Steelers pick Lewis, source says BY MARK CURNUTTE | MCURNUTTE@ENQUIRER.COM Sunday, January 21, 2007 ![]() Marvin Lewis has been offered and has accepted the Steelers' head coaching position, a source in Pittsburgh confirmed late Saturday. Lewis, 48, succeeds Bill Cowher, who coached the Steelers for 15 seasons before resigning Jan. 5. The hiring of Lewis will be announced Monday at a news conference. ESPN and SI.com, Sports Illustrated's Web site, reported yesterday that Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin had been chosen to replace Cowher. An NFL source confirmed yesterday that Tomlin had not heard from the Steelers and no contract negotiations had taken place.

This is crazy, ESPN says Tomlin was hired tonight, and like we ride said, the Trib said Grimm was hired. Someone better get their story straight.
Here's ESPN's link. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2732197 |
