to bad we'll probably lose about half of them in free agency.. We seem to always get good players but we can never hold on to them for very long before the players realize that they ARE good and want to start.....even if it means leaving...

24,
I think we do a fairly good job hanging on to the ones we want to keep. We did have a spell in the mid 90's where that was the case, but name one in the last 5 years that really hurt us. We have a bunch coming up though, Hampton, Haynes ( if he makes the club, Herron was lookin' pretty good), ARE, to name a few that could help you with your case. Hopefully we can keep them. |

Schneck is relatively cheap as his cap number goes, and he's the best long snapper in the league. The last thing we need to worry about is the snap on a gimme game winning field goal..or a crucial punt from our own endzone.
I think Washington has a chance, but its crowded. the most WR's we will keep is 6, at the most. Hines, El, Wilson, Gibson, and behind that its a crap shoot for Washington, cobb, and mays. Yah right now I think Gibson has the upper hand on Mays, IF and I say IF, he does well in camp. Either way I think he makes the team. and the odd man out will probably still make the practice squad. Unless cobb really stinks up the joint, he's got a good shot. |

Based on one game you can not tell much. In my opinion, I would keep Washington around for a while at least and see what he can do vs. Mays. Mays has been around for a while now and has few big plays to show for it. On the other hand, he has been riding the bench in the fourth and fifth spot and that doesn't afford many opportunities.
I can?t remember the specific game, but I remember it was late in the year last year and Mays made a big play. He was either interfered with or he caught a long pass or something, but it was a good play. Also, Mays knows the system, and he may be able to step up and fill in for Plax. I was deeply impressed with Mays and Gibson in the game. |

Second of all, look at who your calling specialists and what they do. chidi, we had very little depth at corner for the last couple seasons, he excels on special teams.....I wouldn't call that strictly a specialist. Morey He is a specialist on special teams and a GREAT one, he was the captain in Philly, and YES every team does have a couple guys strictly for special teams. Kriewaldt Just like chidi, we've had very little depth at linebacker. Kriewaldt does play pretty well on special teams but he also is an adequate backup MLB. Schneck Now this just blew me away, are you kidding me? EVERY team needs a long snapper, its a very important position on a team, consider how many times the ball is snapped for punts, FG's, and extra points, then think about how important it is to have a "specialist" do that. And you want to take away a specialist spot to have a 6th receiver maybe?? How many snaps would he play in a game? 1,2,3? A specialists is way more valuable to have that plays on every special team situation compared to a WR that might get into the game.

Sorry to inject a little humor, but did any one else notice that the little guy wearing Number 80 looked like a shrunken down Plax? The first time he went in motion I was kind of laughing about it.

I knew there would be people to disagree with me on that one.
I relize you must have a long snapper. I just mentioned Schneck to name the four specialists. As far as the others..... Cowher always has these specialist and I think most Steelers fans would tell you that our punt and kick coverage has been below average under Bill. Teams have been returning punts and kicks on us for like 12 years. Last season was good, only giving up two but for the most part I would bet the Steelers rank in the bottom half of the NFL in punts/kicks returned for TD. Everytime we kick the ball I think it is going to be returned for a TD. So whats the point? I have seen Sean Morey take horrible angles on coverage and not even touch the returner (Once Monday night vs. Phily). Don't be consumed by the "he's a great special teamer" talk. It is just another way of saying he's not good enough to start, or he can't do anything else. Cowher loves these guys because they are a reflection of his own career.

chidi, we had very little depth at corner for the last couple seasons, he excels on special teams.....I wouldn't call that strictly a specialist. Little depth at CB??? Scott,Williams,Taylor,Colclough,Townsend-Thats five solid from last year. This year we have Townsend,Williams,Colclough,Taylor, and McFadden. I dont think it's impossible he gets cut.
Morey He is a specialist on special teams and a GREAT one, he was the captain in Philly, and YES every team does have a couple guys strictly for special teams. He hasnt impressed me thus far. There had to be a reason why the Eagles(who were under the cap) cut him. If it came down to him and Chidi i'd take Chidi Kriewaldt Just like chidi, we've had very little depth at linebacker. Kriewaldt does play pretty well on special teams but he also is an adequate backup MLB. The only reason he makes the team every year is because he has some pictures of Cowher lol. And lack of depth If it came down to him and Wallace i'd take Wallace.Schneck Now this just blew me away, are you kidding me? EVERY team needs a long snapper, its a very important position on a team, consider how many times the ball is snapped for punts, FG's, and extra points, then think about how important it is to have a "specialist" do that. Yeah I wouldnt mess with this one either. All these positions except Schneck is up for grabs imo.
