Default Waltrip?

As I've stated in the past, I know absolutely nothing when it comes to NASCAR. But this story catched my eye this morning on ESPN. Tony, maybe you can help me out here. Did Waltrip's crew chief supposedly mixed some type of "liquid" in with the fuel, correct? What was it exactly and how would it give him the upperhand over other racers? Also, has this happened before in NASCAR?

Waltrip fallout tough, but Duel chance still there: http://sports.espn.go.com/rpm/column...rry&id=2766041

this is a great story and shows the lenghts these engineers will go through to gain an edge.

this has never been seen before in nascar.

at 1st i hear it was a type of sterno gel (you know the stuff they burn to keep pans of food warm) then i heard it was straight up jet fuel. i guess both are in gel form and can be smeared onto a surface.

well they smeared some jet fuel on the inside of the intake manifold, that way it would melt into the gasoline right before it was ignited, thus giving more horsepower. this tactic wouldnt do much for a whole race but it was being used for the qualifying engine where they only run the car for 2 laps to see whos fastest and who starts up front for sundays race. its almost a miracle they got caught. them nascar inspectors are always 1 step behind the engineers, so they literally cant leave any stone unturned.

michael waltrip is with a new team this year and one of the few teams that will be driving a camry in toyotas inaugural season in nascar. he is not guraneed to even make it into the race so it is understandable where the people in the shop would try to gain an edge. this stuff goes on with every team in every garage, cause like they say in nascar "if you aint cheatin' you aint tryin."

and they will try anything. a few years ago jeff gordon was accused of soaking all his tires in huge baths of ether to give them better grip on the track.

Ahh, I see.

Follow up question. Are these racers (Waltrip and Gordon) aware of what what's going on with the crew chiefs? In other words, are they in on it or do the crew chiefs go behind their backs and try to pull it off?

everything ive heard, says waltrip woulda had no idea that was going on. this is something that probably wouldve taken place away from the garage at the track. probably back at the home shop in n. carolina.

it depends on the driver too. some of the new drivers know nothing about a car but to turn it on, buckle up and work the pedals and the wheels. other drivers such as rusty wallace (espn's main analyst) was a shock specialist, who would build and work on his own parts for individual races. im sure darrell waltrip knew they used to use an extra 4 feet of tubing or an expandable fuel cell, so that their car would hold more gas than the rest of the competition.

but nascar today has become so technical and specialized, and the drivers are off doing commercials, practice, or speaking engagements, they have no idea if an aerodynamic specialist is altering the shape of the body an 1/8th of an inch to try and pick up 2/10ths of a mph. sometimes thats the difference of starting a race 1st or 20th, and many times the difference between winning and losing.

whats lost in all of this and very under rated is what a team sport nascar is. on the surface it really seems like an individual event with some dude and his car, but the people who build the cars and make them go fast are like coordinators who have to put in a gameplan for every team they face. thats why they will build a seperate car for almost every different track.

Mikey raced his way into the 500. He's annoying, but a good guy.

Matt will start 12th on Sun.
He motored through the field in the 2nd Duel after starting last. Ran 2nd till the last turn when Stremme bumped Jeffy into the lead and we got shuffled....finished 5th. All is well.

Jeffy had a problem in post-race inspection...uh-oh, something under the car...air deflector? shock mount?
Oh - it's the #24? Nevermind- nothing to see here - move along.

p.s. New paint is sweet

Hey Spike.

Congrats to Jeff Gordon on his win, since it is just the most experienced and best draft race car driver winning, you know?

Or is there another conspiracy?

ahem...

Who says cheaters never win?

Reid Spencer / Special to FOXSports.com

"After winning the second Gatorade Duel 150, Jeff Gordon was relegated to the 42nd starting position for Sunday's Daytona 500 after his car failed post-race inspection. Gordon's car was found to be roughly an inch too low, the result of what NASCAR characterized as an unintentional misalignment of a bolt and shock mount."

Nothing to see here Suit...it was "unintentional" as determined by the NASCAR Psychics.

Gordon's winning car fails Duels inspection
Will start 42nd in Daytona 500 because of infraction

By David Caraviello, NASCAR.COM
February 15, 2007
08:05 PM EST

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Jeff Gordon's winning racecar in Thursday's Gatorade Duels 150 qualifying race failed post-race inspection, dropping him from fourth to 42nd on the starting grid for Sunday's Daytona 500.

Gordon's car was deemed "close to an inch" too low, according to NASCAR officials, due to the fact that a bolt on the shock fastener was misaligned.

"We're sure this wasn't intentional," said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR's vice president of competition.

No fines or point deductions will be assessed to the No. 24 team, according to Pemberton.

Despite the infraction, Gordon still goes into the record books as the qualifying race winner.

No mention of the fact that it was mistake? And that NASCAR actually considered the car unsafe?

"We feel it was unintentional, and actually fairly unsafe," said NASCAR competition director Robin Pemberton. "We feel that it was a part failure, and we feel that it was unintentionally done. I think it would be marginal at best if there was any advantage."

I doubt a newly married man with a kid on the way would be doctoring his car in a way that might make him crash just to win a non-points race.

Anyway, glad to see the silly season is back.

i felt good about kurt bush's chances this weekend till i seen all the lenghts everyone else will go through to cheat and win. i really think hes gonna have to punt somebody to pull it off (stewart or johnson maybe?).

it looks like it could be a really competitive race, but in the end, it seems the chevys still have that extra gear to go to.
