Default Steelers eye free agents

Steelers eye free agents

By John Harris
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sunday, February 25, 2007

A list of the NFL's unrestricted free agents:

Quarterbacks

Jeff Garcia, Philadelphia
Top free agent QB deserves starting job.

Damon Huard, Kansas City
Possible starter with right team.

Shaun King, Indianapolis
Former starter wants to make comeback.

Tim Rattay, Tampa Bay
Solid No. 2. passer.

Anthony Wright, Cincinnati
Can start in a pinch.

What will the Steelers do: Pass. Desire a young No. 3 quarterback, but the best free agents are all older.

Running backs

Chris Brown, Tennessee
Rushed for over 1,000 yards two years ago but can't stay healthy.

Cornell Buckhalter, Philadelphia
Averaged more than 4 yards per carry in 2006.

T.J. Duckett, Redskins
Steelers favorite available at right price.

Ahman Green, Green Bay
Biggest name on list comes wth biggest (injury) risk.

Dominic Rhodes, Indianapolis
DUI arrest could offset Super Bowl heroics.

What will the Steelers do: Might pursue Duckett a year after they considered trading for him. Also don't discount Baltimore's Ovie Mughelli, a blocking back with a burst.

Wide receivers

Drew Bennett, Tennessee
Big receiver has big-play potential.

Kevin Curtis, St. Louis
Ten touchdowns catches in past two seasons.

Bobby Engram, Seattle
Former Penn State star is excellent possession receiver.

Keenan McCardell, San Diego
Getting up in age.

Donte Stallworth, Philadephia
Can't be covered, but can't stay healthy.

What will the Steelers do: Consider Cincinnati's Kelley Washington, who's one of the taller free agent WRs and has playmaking ability.

Tight ends

Kyle Brady, Jacksonville
More blocker than receiver.

Daniel Graham, New England
Produces when called upon.

Eric Johnson, San Francisco
Caught 82 passes in 2005.

David Martin, Green Bay
Good receiving skills.

Jerramy Stevens, Seattle
Joey Porter's favorite tight end beginning to blossom.

What will the Steelers do: Probably nothing. Steelers are strong at tight end.

Tackles

Jordan Black, Kansas City
Opened holes for Larry Johnson.

Leonard Davis, Arizona
Pro Bowl potential.

Mike Gandy, Buffalo
Decent NFL starter.

Damion McIntosh, Miami
Started 13 games in 2006.

Roman Oben, San Diego
Veteran backup.

What will the Steelers do: Steelers don't want to spend a lot of money here. Gandy and Black are possibilities, but only if price is right.

Guards

Kris Dielman, San Diego
Tenacious run blocker.

Derrick Dockery, Washington
Started 61 of a possible 64 games.

Todd Steussie, St. Louis
Understands his role.

Eric Steinbach, Cincinnati
Turns 27 in April and already has 62 career starts.

Floyd Womack, Seattle
Backup in the right system.

What will the Steelers do: Addressing the guard position isn't a priority, but Dockery is the type of player the Steelers like. He lines up and plays.

Defensive ends

Chris Kelsay, Buffalo
All-around play his No. 1 asset.

David Bowens, Miami
18 sacks in the past three seasons.

Bryan Thomas, New York Jets
Former first-round pick had 8 1/2 sacks in 2006.

Juqua Thomas, Philadelphia
Gets after the quarterback.

Dewayne White, Tampa Bay
Pass-rusher would be perfect fit for Steelers.

What will the Steelers do: Consider White, who stepped in for the injured Simeon Rice. It's in White's favor that he played for Steelers coach Mike Tomlin in Tampa Bay.

Defensive tackles

Aubrayo Franklin, Baltimore
Stuck on bench in Baltimore.

Michael Myers, Denver
Productive reserve

Alvin McKinley, Cleveland
Veteran insurance.

Michael Myers, Denver
Rotating member of Broncos' tough defense.

Hollis Thomas, New Orleans
Recorded 3 1/2 sacks in first season in New Orleans.

What will the Steelers do: Pursue young prospects such as Franklin who are part of a winning system.

Linebackers

E.J. Henderson, Minnesota
Played one season under Mike Tomlin.

Cato June, Indianapolis
Playmaker in his prime coming off Super Bowl win.

Kawika Mitchell, Kansas City
Second-round pick in 2003.

Adalius Thomas, Baltimore
Rushes the quarterback, plugs the run and chases receivers.

Demorrio Williams, Atlanta
92 tackles last season.

What will the Steelers do: Add a potential starter from group including Henderson, Mitchell and Williams.

Cornerbacks

Phillip Buchanon, Tampa Bay
Underachieving corner.

Nate Clements, Buffalo
Top unrestricted free agent will command top dollar.

Nick Harper, Indianapolis
Market value will never be higher.

Tory James, Cincinnati
Showing signs of wear and tear.

David Macklin, Arizona
Cardinals defense came on late.

What will the Steelers do: Sign a veteran CB for little or nothing

Safeties

Tyrone Carter, Steelers
Versatile and effective.

Deon Grant, Jacksonville
Played for one of league's strongest units.

Ken Hamlin, Seattle
Defensive quarterback.

Kevin Kaesviharn, Cincinnati
Getting better and better.

Germone Sapp, Baltimore
Needs opportunity to play.

What will the Steelers do: Nothing. They are solid at safety, and Carter could be the odd-man out.

Quarterbacks: Agree, look into developing a younger QB to take over for Charlie as a back-up when the time comes.3

Running backs: Honestly feel we can do better by drafting young second threat in second or third round this year (Hunter, Bush, or the kid from Rutgers..forget the name at the moment). A lot less money, with much more upside.

Receivers : Nothing available in free agency we don't already have. I really love Anthony Gonzalez out of OSU. If he's availble in third or fourth round and we've already addressed some other areas, he'd be a nice addition.

Tight Ends: Again, nothing of any interest. Maybe a later round draft pick for development

Tackles: Would definitely look into Black or Gandy. Time to push some people on that O line

Guards : Steinbach is where I think we can make a splash. He can provide alot of vesatility on the line and alot of veteran leadership (if i'm not mistaken he's played some center in cinci also...wonder if he'd consider a permanent change ?????, ala Jeff Hartings coming out of Detroit.

Tackles : If Management feels Franklin has an upside, may be worth looking into for some depth.

Ends : If White fits into what Tomlin has in mind for the future of our Defense...Welcome to the Burgh Mr. White

Linebackers: Defintely would be intersted in Williams or Henderson

Safeties and Corners : We'll see about any interest in Corners...this will tell us alot on how Tomin feels about our current crop of DB's. I think if we can address some of our pass rush issues our secondary will become a whole lot better.

as usual I doubt we do anything much but pick up no names in fa if anything that will not do much but fill a roster spot to look at. The Draft will be the busy time for us. FA will be yet again another boring time for us. FA is filled with to many risked and injury prone players and players that will cost to much.

we've got barely any money left and a bunch of starters entering a contract year. i highly doubt we sign anyone on that list... even the small name guys.
