Default Steelers doctor questioned in steroid probe

The headline for this story actually appears to be worse than what is going on, but any time a physician associated with a NFL team is buying $150,000worth of HGH and steroids on his personal credit card you can see why the authorities might be interested.

Hopefully the explanation for the purchases is true, although why a physician on staff at UPMC would not have purchased patient meds through UPMC's pharmacy at what I assume is a cheaper rate is puzzling to me.

Steelers doctor questioned in steroid probe

Authorities have questioned an associate team physician for the Steelers as part of a yearlong investigation into illegal Internet sales of anabolic steroids, according to a published report.

Dr. Richard A. Rydze, an internal medicine specialist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, was questioned last month about a $150,000 purchase of testosterone and human growth hormone, according to a report published Tuesday in the Times Union in Albany, N.Y.

There is no indication that Rydze has done anything wrong, and a spokeswoman for Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares would not say if he is a target of the investigation.
...

The Times Union report states that a New York investigator who has been tracking purchases from Signature flew to Pittsburgh to ask Rydze why he used a personal credit card to purchase some $150,000 worth of testosterone and human growth hormone last year.

The newspaper quotes unnamed sources as saying Rydze told investigators that the drugs were for his private patients. The retail value of the drugs, according to the Times Union report, is about $750,000.

Physicians are allowed to order and dispense prescription drugs, but investigators told the Times Union that the orders placed by Rydze drew interest because of the volume, his position with an NFL team and his use of a personal credit card.

Rydze, who won a silver medal in the platform diving competition at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, is medical director of the FBI's Pittsburgh office, the Little Sisters of the Poor nursing home and Community College of Allegheny County.

Because this doc is associated with the FBI he is going to get a thorough federal investigation in addition to what is being investigated by the authorities in New York.

Hopefully he's a red herring in this---otherwise it could end up very bad.

Some how I don't think he bought the steroids for the Little Sisters of the Poor! LOL.

hopefully this just gets swept under the rug, due to his position, or else he may have to provide records of these "private patients" he was providing $750,000 worth of roids too.

i have a bad feeling we will find he has strong links to ex-steelers mike vrabel, chad scott, and hank poteat.

Steelers raising steroids suspicion

So there I was, reading a fabulous story by Brendan J. Lyons of the Albany Times Union about a major federal steroids investigation, when I came upon what Bob Woodward would call a "Holy Crap!" bit of reportage:

Last month, a New York investigator who has been tracking suspicious purchases from Signature Pharmacy flew to Pittsburgh to interview a top physician for the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers about why he allegedly used a personal credit card to purchase roughly $150,000 in testosterone and human growth hormone in 2006.

The physician, Richard A. Rydze, who won a silver medal in platform diving in the 1972 Olympics, told the investigator the drugs were for his private patients, according to a person briefed on the interview. Rydze is an internist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He also is a consulting physician for the FBI and the Federal Aviation Administration.

There are no allegations Rydze violated any laws. Many doctors are allowed under Pennsylvania rules to order and dispense prescription drugs. But investigators in New York said his orders of testosterone piqued their interest because of the large volume, his position with an NFL team and because he allegedly used a personal credit card.

Are you kidding me?

A Pittsburgh Steelers associate team physician allegedly buying $150,000 worth of testosterone and HGH?

In one year?

Using a personal credit card?

This is very interesting, even if you approach the NFL from the belief that a fair amount of players use steroids, and that the NFL and NFLPA privately acknowledge a lot of these guys have to use to make it through the season, and bust just enough of them to give fans and Congress and even cynical media the impression that they've got doping licked.

The Times Union reported that Rydze -- a '72 silver medalist in platform diving who is also a medical doctor of the FBI's Pittsburgh office, the Community College of Allegheny County, and the Little Sisters of the Poor nursing home -- told investigators the dope was for private patients. Sources also told the paper the retail value of these steroids purchased by Rydze, who attends Steelers home and away games, was $750,000.

How far will this investigation go? Who knows. Rydze won't comment, but did tell SI.com earlier this month that he gives the HGH to elderly patients and that it's "not for athletes, never. ... The Rooneys are aware that I do this ... I mean, they have my trust that I would never do this with an athlete."

Greg Aiello, the NFL's spokesman, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that the league will "very definitely be looking into it."

Until charges are filed, I'm considering this info in the same light as I did the "story" about Brady once having a conversation with Barry Bonds' trainer.

From Yahoo (http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news?slu...v=ap&type=lgns):

"Athletes were involved as customers of an illicit steroid distribution network that led authorities to raid two pharmacies in Orlando and arrest four company officials, a New York prosecutor said."

If Rydze distributed illegally, why was he also not arrested?

However, you're right about fans of other teams having alot of fun with this. Thank God Hardwork has been banned....

Ed.B.of the P-G has this story up this afternoon

UPMC to investigate Steelers' doctor who bought HGH

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center will began an internal investigation into the purchase of human growth hormone by Dr. Richard Rydze, one of the center's physicians and a Steelers' internist.

"UPMC became aware of this investigation yesterday afternoon by reading the newspaper reports," said a statement released by Susan Manko of the UPMC news bureau.

"We have initiated our own internal investigation. At this time we have no further factual information or comments. We, of course, maintain the highest quality of integrity and ethical behavior of our physicians. So we are initiating our own internal review."

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07059/765645-100.stm

If I was on staff at UPMC I do not think I would wait for them to read in the newspaper that I had been interviewed by criminal investigators regarding my purchases of $150,000 of HGH and steroids on my personal credit card. Presumably the Steelers would have liked to have been told about this as well (assuming they do not already know).

Dr. Rydze has some 'splaining to do.

I look for him to soon resign from his affiliations with UPMC and the Steelers to spend more time with his family
