im pretty sure we still get one despite signing clark. in this case 3 factors go into the formula to decide which round:
hopes draft position vs. clarks hopes new contract vs. clarks hopes production vs. clarks since hope edges clark in all 3 categories we are still compensated. now in the case of the patriots losing tully banta cain, they wont get one because their replacement for him edges him in all 3 categories. |

Actually, draft position has nothing to do with compensatory picks, neither does the position played. If a guy is released, you cannot receive compensation and the formula for compensatory picks has never been released, but the main factors are:
1-per year average of the contract 2-games played and games started 3-post season awards. Last season, there was one 3rd round pick given and that went to the Jets. They lost Lamont Jordan the year before and he signed a contract that averaged 5.51M. He played in 14 games. The only other contract that averaged over 5M and had a guy start more than 14 games, was Reggie Heyward and the Donkeys received the first 4th round comp pick. Now, I think to get the 3rd round comp pick, you need to have an average salary of over 5.1M, play in over 14 games, and hopefully play well. Now, Hope signed a deal worth more than 5M per season...but was it big enough? No details were given, but I do know his signing bonus was 6M and he had a 5M roster bonus this year. His salaries totalled 19.085M meaning his total contract was 30.085M without any other LTBE incentives OR bonus money. Hope played in every game, was considered a Pro Bowl alternate, and had career highs in tackles and INTs. He could get us a 3rd round pick, but will definitely get us a 4th. Now, Randle El signed for 7 years, 31.25M which is 4.46M per season. He started 16 games and put up the numbers we are used to seeing from El, nothing great, but his usual stuff. Because of his salary and his starts, I think he gets us a 4th. Finally, Kimo signed a deal averaging 3.2M per season and we added Ryan Clark at 1.75M per season. Kimo played 16 games and Clark played in 13. Neither had post-season honors. The NFL has a net loss evaluation where if you lose the same number of players you signed but you signed lesser guys, they can give you a compensatory selection. We may see a 7th rounder for Kimo.....but then again, we may not. The worst case scenario, we get 2-4ths and nothing else. The best case scenario, we get a 3rd, 4th, and a 7th. We could fall anywhere in between that though. |
