Pirates rout Manatee College, 8-1, in exhibition opener

Wednesday, February 28, 2007
By Dejan Kovacevic, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Cuban defector Yoslan Herrera pitched two perfect innings in the Pirates' 8-1 exhibition-opening rout of Manatee Community College today at McKechnie Field.

Herrera, pitching competitively for the first time since 2005, started and struck out two while facing the minimum six batters.

Using a lineup with only one major-league player -- catcher Ryan Doumit -- the Pirates leaped to a 6-0 lead after two innings. Highlights were Neil Walker's two-run double in the first inning and his brother-in-law, Don Kelly, going 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs. Kelly played at Mt. Lebanon High School and Point Park College.

Manatee's Bennett Davis drew the loudest applause of the afternoon for homering off Kip Bouknight in the sixth.

The Pirates open their Grapefruit League schedule tomorrow at McKechnie against Cincinnati. Zach Duke will start and be followed by Tom Gorzelanny, Salomon Torres, Kevin Gryboski and Matt Capps. Eric Milton will start for the Reds.

Bucs, Reds combine for eight home runs on the day
By Dawn Klemish / MLB.com
http://pittsburgh.pirates.mlb.com/ne...=.jsp&c_id=pit

REDS 9, PIRATES 7
at Bradenton, Fla.
Thursday, March 1

Reds at the plate: Second baseman Brandon Phillips had a towering, two-run homer to left-center in the fifth inning, and Mark Bellhorn followed with one of his own three batters later. Left-fielder Adam Dunn tied the score at 1 on an 0-1 pitch in the first with a homer that cleared the scoreboard in left-center field, and Josh Hamilton bested that with a two-run, straightaway home run that cleared the two-story wall beyond the 400-foot sign. Infielder Jeff Keppinger went deep as well.

Pirates at the plate: Center fielder Luis Matos homered in each of his first two at-bats of the game, both of them solo shots. Left fielder Andrew McCutchen hit a 1-1 pitch out of the park in the first inning, doubled in the second, and finished the day 2-for-4.

Reds on the mound: Starter Eric Milton scattered six hits in two innings but surrendered just two runs, each of them homers. Kirk Saarloos pitched two perfect innings.

Pirates on the mound: Starter Zach Duke threw two innings and allowed just one hit, a home run, while fanning two. Solomon Torres surrendered four runs in the fifth inning on four hits and a walk.

Grapefruit League records: Reds 1-0; Pirates 0-1.

Up next: Cincinnati will play the Twins in a 7 p.m. ET game Friday at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers. Reds righty Kyle Lohse will take the mound against Minnesota right-hander Ramon Ortiz. The Pirates travel to Kissimmee on Friday for a 1:05 p.m. ET game against the Braves at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. Right-hander Ian Snell will start for Pittsburgh against Braves righty John Smoltz.

Eldred hits third home run in Pirates' 8-8 tie
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07064/767030-63.stm
Monday, March 05, 2007
By Dejan Kovacevic, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Brad Eldred homered for the third time in as many games in the Pirates' 8-8, 10-inning tie with the Toronto Blue Jays today at Knology Park.

The game was called after the 10th inning when each team ran out of pitchers.

Leading off the second inning, Eldred launched a 2-2 fastball from Toronto starter Josh Towers high above a tall group of trees beyond left field.

"It feels good," Eldred said. "It's good to show that the thumb, obviously, is no issue and that the power is still there. That's something they might be concerned with."

Eldred missed all but the first 18 games of last season with Class AAA Indianapolis to a badly broken left thumb.

In addition to the three exhibition home runs he has hit in nine plate appearances, he hit one in the team's intrasquad scrimmage last Tuesday.

Minor-league infielder Eddy Garabito broke a 4-4 tie with a two-out line-drive home run to left in the seventh inning. That came right after Jose Bautista's second hit of the game, a single up the middle.

Reliever Brian Rogers gave back the two runs in the eighth, but the Pirates rallied for two of their own in the ninth.

Neil Walker doubled to right to lead off, took third on Garabito's since and scored on Vic Buttler's sacrifice fly. Mike Edwards' two-out single brought another run.

Zach Duke started for the Pirates and had two perfect innings, including three strikeouts, before giving up Royce Clayton's two-run double in the third.

Closer Salomon Torres pitched a perfect fifth.

Relief prospect Dave Davidson blew an 8-6 lead in the ninth. The Blue Jays got a single, a hit batsman and an error by shortstop Javier Guzman to loaded the bases with one out. Davidson struck out Ryan Roberts, but Rob Cosby lined a two-run single to left to tie the score.

Bryan Bullington followed with a perfect 10th.

The Pirates, 0-4-1 in Grapefruit play, face the Philadelphia Phillies tomorrow at McKechnie Field.
