While Nov. 26 is a day Porter can look forward to, he can't be happy about another date on his calendar. The linebacker faces a May 14 court date after he was cited for misdemeanor battery for his role in a fight at a Las Vegas casino with Cincinnati Bengals tackle Levi Jones.

The incident occurred 11 days after he signed a five-year, $32.5 million contract with the Dolphins.

"I feel like it was an unfortunate incident that happened," Porter said. "I'm married with four kids. I had no business even putting myself in a situation like that. I was actually down there for my mother's 50th birthday. I've been embarrassed since the whole thing happened. But it's nothing I can take back.

"I don't know how Levi views the situation. . . . I'm too old for this type of stuff. I'm definitely going to stay away from all the off-the-field incidents. I can get in all the incidents you want to on the field, but this off-the-field stuff is not for me."

In case Porter is wondering, Brown is quoted on the Bengals' Web site as saying the incident with the ex-Steeler was a "cowardly assault by a coward."

Given the NFL's new conduct policy -- and that Tennessee's Pacman Jones was just suspended for the entire 2007 season while Cincinnati receiver Chris Henry got eight games -- Porter sounded understandably nervous.

He is hoping to avoid having a chat with commissioner Roger Goodell.

"I don't think we'll have a meeting," Porter said. "I got a citation. I got a ticket. It's like getting a speeding ticket, is what I got. I got a ticket and a fine. From my understanding, it's supposed to go away. It's not like I have a lot of crimes and stuff like this.

"I've never been in trouble outside of football. All of my penalties came on the football field. . . . It's something I definitely want to put behind me, and hopefully (Jones) feels the same way. The faster we put it behind us, it will go away and I can continue my career and he can continue his."

Porter even offered to call Jones and apologize.

By the way, the Dolphins host Cincinnati in the season finale on Dec. 30.

porter is smart and definitely contrite. if anything he may get a stiff warning and possibly a "strike". there definitely wont be a 2nd or 3rd off the fiels incident.

whats funny is listening to the bengal fans whine and beg for porter to get a stiffer suspension than c. henry as they become apologists saying he did nothing against another person like porter did. also amusing how they label him a thug, and compare him getting shot in a driveby to a member of adam jones posse shooting and paralyzing somebody. yeah, thats the same. bengalfans have every right to be embarassed and humiliated for their team. they have no right to be completely stupid though.

so joey porter didnt bother showing up for court today, and had his lawyer enter a plea of no contest. which is pretty much admitting guilt and an unwillingness to fight the charge.

he got a $1000 fine. so much for all the whint bengalfans hoping he would serve some time like their boy chris henry. i bet joey was betting $1000 a hand at the blackjack tables that night and it was more than worth it for him to kick levis ass.

now its up to the commish whether joey faces any more punishment. personally i think joeys "paid" enough. lol

Adam Schefter (NFL Network) is reporting that Levi will more than likely pursue a civil case against Mr. Badass Porter.

I would guess huge numbers will be floated at the beginning of proceedings (you can sue someone for any amount - but its basically irrelevant to how much you will be awarded even if successful) but it should still be significantly more than $1000.

I also wonder if Porter will be subject to a playing time ban under the new disciplinary policy of the NFL?

Porter is in a good situation to succeed playing opposite a all start like JT - if he can't get it done in Miami......
