Default St. Vincent names field after Chuck Noll

http://post-gazette.com/pg/07095/775329-85.stm

Thursday, April 05, 2007
By Eleanor Chute, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

When Steelers fans go to St. Vincent College in July to watch players at training camp, they'll be able to sit on new bleachers overlooking a field named after a former coach.

St. Vincent yesterday announced that name: Chuck Noll Field.

The field's playing surface itself was constructed in 2003-04.

On Monday, workers began building various amenities, including aluminum bleachers for 1,050 people.

"We are looking forward to seeing those bleachers full of fans who come to visit Steelers training camp in the summer as well as by the college students who will enjoy a new opportunity to watch Bearcat football on campus," said Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, chancellor of St. Vincent.

"The view of the field against the backdrop of the campus and the mountains to the east is spectacular."

The college's Bearcats will begin their first season Sept. 1 with a game against Gallaudet University of Maryland.

In a prepared statement, Mr. Noll, who coached the Steelers for 23 years, said he is "deeply honored."

"I have vivid memories of the summer training camps where we brought each team together, despite the heat and humidity and work that we had to do," Mr Noll said.

Archabbot Nowicki expressed appreciation to the Steelers and its owners, the Rooney family, for having the training camp at St. Vincent since 1966.

"Every student athlete and the entire student body will benefit from this facility for generations to come," said St. Vincent President Jim Towey.

"We'll be kicking off with football, but other teams will play on Chuck Noll Field as well.

"We'll be thinking of creative ways to integrate this facility into the educational experience of all the students, so that we can fully share this gift with all our St. Vincent family."

Here's the drawing of the field

Field named after Chuck Noll
Thursday, April 5, 2007

By Steelers.com

The team he put together was the reason that St. Vincent College first became a tourist destination for generations of Steelers fans, and so it is fitting that the field on which the Bearcats football team will begin Division III play this fall will bear his name.

Chuck Noll Field.

"This was a wonderful convergence of opinion on what would be the right name for the stadium," said St. Vincent College president Jim Towey. "This one felt great. It was clearly a way to honor the great tradition that St. Vincent has with the Steelers. We're big fans of the Rooneys, and they liked the idea, and this being their summer home made it even more fitting."

The college announced that work has started on a facility that will consist of 21 rows of aluminum benches to seat 1,050. A two-story, brick-and-glass press box with booths for coaches and college guests, plus a concession stand, also are part of the project. The playing surface will be one of the fields that were built in 2003-04 as part of a $1 million upgrade of the college's athletic facilities.

"I am deeply honored that my name will be attached to the field at St. Vincent," said Chuck Noll. "I have vivid memories of the summer training camps where we brought each team together, despite the heat and humidity and work that we had to do."

The seating area of Chuck Noll Field will be built on a slope of land in front of St. Benedict Hall, one of two dormitories the Steelers use during training camp. The main dormitory facility used by the team is Rooney Hall.

"Chuck never sought a lot of media attention and was always shy about drawing attention to himself," said Dan Rooney, "but we think he deserves the public recognition that forever will be part of the new stadium at St. Vincent ? Chuck Noll Field."

St. Vincent College first played varsity football in 1923, but the sport was discontinued at the varsity level following the 1962 season. The highlight for the Bearcats was in 1949 when the team finished 9-0 and defeated Emory & Henry, 7-6, in the Tangerine Bowl.

This reincarnation of the Bearcats football team will play on the Division III level, it will be coached by Bob Colbert, the brother of Director of Football Operations Kevin Colbert, and it will play its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 1 vs. Gallaudet.

"Every student athlete and the entire student body will benefit from this facility for generations to come," said Towey. "We'll be kicking off with football, but other teams will play on Chuck Noll Field as well."

Well as an SVC grad, I can tell you the Steelers are very well ingrained in the campus. There is Rooney Hall (one of the newer and nicest dorms) and now Chuck Noll Field.

Can't wait for training camp!

Great for Noll, and the players. Must be an inspiration to train in a place named after such a succesful coach. Maybe one day we'll get a Mike Tomlin Field. Or Cowher Field.
