Sanchez activated from the DL
Batting champ sidelined four weeks by knee injury By Justice B. Hill / MLB.com Read Here CINCINNATI -- The Pirates recalled infielder Freddy Sanchez after their 7-5 loss here Saturday to the Reds and optioned catcher Ryan Doumit to Triple-A Indianapolis. The Pirates had been expected to recall Sanchez, who had been on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained knee. He had played in one game for the Indians, but the cold weather that had lingered in Indianapolis and throughout the Midwest canceled two others game that he'd been scheduled to play. Sanchez, who led the National League in hitting last season, told general manager Dave Littlefield earlier that he'd wanted to play an entire Minor League game before returning to the big leagues. But with Indianapolis facing another postponed game Sunday, he decided he'd be better off returning to the Pirates. "All along, it's been based on how Freddy feels," Littlefield said. "So he says he's ready to go." Sanchez was scheduled to rejoin the team Saturday night, although manager Jim Tracy wasn't sure when he would arrive. Littlefield said Sanchez didn't get quite as many at-bats that he'd hoped to get during his rehab, and he wasn't sure if Tracy would use Sanchez in the game Sunday. "It's gonna be Tracy's call," Littlefield said. --- Hopefuly we can turn this losing streak around with his return. |
