2005 ESPN Poll, 43% of NFL Fans are Women

NEW YORK, Sept 3 (UPI) -- When the new NFL season kicks off this week in Pittsburgh, statistics show a record 45 million women plan to watch the debut televised game.
NFL statistics show that from 2001 to 2005, the percentage of female NFL fans increased by 8.6 percent, and in 2005 an ESPN fan poll found that 43 percent of the football league's fans were women, the New York Post reported.
"I don't leave my house on Sundays," said Mary Giovagnoni, a devout New York Giants fan. "If I have to leave, it's on the radio. I love it."
Women have also begun participating in fantasy football leagues and wearing NFL apparel, causing the NFL to design new feminine products such as thongs adorned with the themes of popular teams. Figures show that 33 million women tune in to at least as three games and female fans account for $150 million in NFL gear sales a year.

I'm just curious if they did a study to see how many of them actually know football, how many of them are Steelers fans, and how many of them just claim to be a fan because they married some idiot that wasn't a Steelers fan.

You know, I do believe, if they undertook that study then it would turn out that the only women who really knew football were in fact Steeler fans.

Lets face it, the men and women who didn't support the Steelrs would probably misunderstand the question anyway!!

I just wish they would stop making Steeler merchandise in pink. My kids bought me a pink shirt for Mother's Day. Now I have to figure out a way to dye it black and gold without hurting their feelings. Just because we are girls doesn't mean everything has to be pink or frilly. Next they will start selling helmets with lace trim.

I agree with this comment. Nothing screams "FANGIRL!" like pink jerseys and pink hats. It makes us look...I don't know...like we don't know anything about the game itself. *is a chick who actually knows the diff between a 3-4 and a 4-3* If you're going to be a fan, you wear the colors. Some women realize that. I just wish the people who make the merchandise would come to the same conclusion.

I have one...one pink Ben shirt and thats a sleep shirt that I only wear around the house. If I did not know something about football I would not call myself a Steelers fan. And LITP I meant that we *womens* are growing in fan size. I havent grew an inch since I was a sophmore in high school.
