Default Prisco: Porter tops list of most overrated

Quote:
Overrated-underrated: Porter, Warren on opposite ends
May 31, 2007
By Pete Prisco

A certain magazine known for a cover jinx put Joey Porter on its cover last year and called him the NFL's meanest man.

This would have been a better description: The NFL's most overrated player.

Porter signed a five-year, $32 million deal with the Miami Dolphins this spring as an unrestricted free agent. The Dolphins think he can be a pass-rush force, adding to an already talented defense.

Many personnel people and coaches I talked to think they're getting something else, which is a player who has more bark than bite.

Porter had seven sacks last season, but six of those came in three games, two in each of those games. That means in the other 11 games he played -- he missed two for injuries -- he had one sack.

"What's even more alarming about that," said an AFC personnel director, "is that he played a 3-4 outside linebacker. Those players are expected to get double-digits sacks at the least."

Porter turned 30 in March, which is even more reason for concern. Add it all up, and it's why he's the pick as my most overrated player in the NFL, which is something I've picked each of the past four years.

This isn't to pile on Porter, who was fined $1,000 this week for his role in a fight with Cincinnati Bengals tackle Levi Jones in a Las Vegas casino. Porter could still face sanctions from the league for that incident.

The flip side of an overrated player is the league's most underrated player.

So who's that lucky player?

It's New England defensive end Ty Warren. In his fourth season in 2006, Warren had 7? sacks and 84 tackles. It was his breakout season, and one that some said should have landed him in Hawaii for the Pro Bowl.

The problem is that Warren plays opposite Richard Seymour, who is one of the best defensive linemen in the league. Seymour gets most of the attention, which is why Warren doesn't.

But keep an eye on Warren this season. He might be ready to join Seymour in Hawaii.

Here are the underrated and overrated players for each of the league's 32 teams.
see link.

i guess if youre an ex player for one of the last 3 teams to win a championship (colts, steelers or patriots) you are the most overrated player on your new team.

e. james
d. rhodes
j. porter
a. randle el
t. law
d. branch
d. woody
w. mcginnest

(you gotta love the patriot hate though.) must have had to even out writing something good about warren

So the difference between the most overrated and underrated is a half a sack???? Makes no sense. Even if factoring in the salaries, it's still out of whack because last year JP was paid much less than his new contract.

look at these nuggets of journalistic gold:

Quote:
Overrated

G Damien Woody. He hasn't played well since signing with the Lions as a free agent and now he might go to the bench.
Quote:
Overrated

TE Bubba Franks. His career has gone down the toilet in a hurry. This former first-round pick is now fighting for a job.
Quote:
Overrated

MLB Dan Morgan. The tools are there, but he can't stay on the field. That puts him in this category.
Quote:
Buffalo Bills
Overrated

RT Langston Walker. It's hard to find one on this young team, but since they paid him money as a free agent he's the pick.

The difference is that Warren is a 3-4 DE with 7.5 sacks and Porter is a OLB in a 3-4 with 7 sacks.

Not many 3-4 DE's hit the heady heights of 5 sacks.

And he is 'over-rated' because of the money he is being paid by the Dolphins and how last years production projects into this year.

The Patriots didn't bother with swagger to start this NFL season; they went straight to defiant. Either you're one of them or you're about to get crushed.

Ya Pete Prick-so is a useless hack for sure - most people would embarrased to churn out that quality of 'journalism' on a message board let alone get paid for producing it in the 'real media'.

Thats my point. He hasn't played for this years salary yet. If he gets 15 sacks then he won't be over rated. Besides isn't Freeny a DE?? Not sure why you would say 5 sacks is a lot for a DE.

If we try and discount the fact that Prisco is something of a moron, I think I can see the reason that players go from SB winners to 'over-rated'.

Its mainly because certain teams try to cherry pick available talent from a 'winning' team and then end up over paying for it.

Is that player capable of making a huge impact on his new team, or was he simply a small cog in a successful, well tuned machine?

Beware the ex-Patriot on a huge salary - i'd love nothing more than for teams to stop offering these guys silly money and recognise them for what they are (players who have played to their absolute potential by a coach who is the best at maximising talent).

Never happen though, teams will over pay for some of that SB 'fairy dust' (no Brady jokes please )

Freeney is a DE in a 4-3 where DE's are the primary pass rushers.

Warren is a DE in a 3-4 where the OLB's are the primary pass rushers (the DE's are there to collapse the pocket and stop the run)
