I'm sorry I missed this. It's incomprehensible to imagine the World without D-Day, and I still am in awe that so many would sacrifice so much for people and Countries that were not their own.

I've always felt that "In Flanders Field" was the most powerful memorial poem.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

WWII memorial OK'ed with conditions

A long-delayed World War II memorial proposed for the North Shore won preliminary approval from the city's Art Commission today, though its future remains hazy.

The commission approved placing the memorial, which has been in the works since 2001, on the "Great Lawn" of the North Shore riverfront park, in between Heinz Field and the Del Monte building. But it attached a raft of conditions on the approval, including moving it into a mass of trees on the north edge of the lawn, changes to its design and a request that supporters look for alternate sites.

The current design by Washington D.C. artist Larry Kirkland is for a circle of 10 steel and glass spires, each 36 feet tall, placed on a large granite plate. Supporters hoped to place it in the northeast corner of the Great Lawn, near the Del Monte building.

The Riverlife Task Force, along with the Heinz Endowments, today objected to placing the memorial there, saying it would ruin longstanding plans for the lawn to be a recreational space. The endowments issued $5 million to help renovate the lawn during the stadium construction drive.

Partially due to such concerns, the Art Commission pushed off a vote on the memorial last month. It granted tentative approval today only after the city-county Sports & Exhibiton Authority issued its own preliminary approval, including calls for the memorial to be pushed back into trees lining North Shore Drive.

The Ravenstahl administration supports placing the memorial in that same space. Councilman William Peduto, who chairs City Council's art committee, said he would help memorial advocates find a new site if they wished.
