Default Steelers' Reid to miss voluntary OTA practices

By The Tribune-Review
Wednesday, June 6, 2007

Wide receiver/return specialist Willie Reid has been bothered by his left foot and will be held out of the voluntary OTA practices that conclude next week as a precaution. "Right now, we're at the point where we just need to rest it a little bit and make sure it's all the way healthy for training camp," Reid said Tuesday. Reid suffered a midfoot sprain while returning a kickoff last October and missed the rest of the season. Reid, a third-round pick in 2006, said he didn't have any problems with his foot in either of the two minicamps the Steelers held in April and May. When it was a little tender following the Steelers' first OTA practice May 22, Reid and the training staff opted for the safe route, which means he won't run pass routes for the Steelers again until training camp.
* Count quarterback Ben Roethlisberger among those players happy that the Steelers re-signed veteran running back Verron Haynes. Roethlisberger said Haynes is a good friend of his, and he doesn't just mean off the field. "He does such a great job of picking up blitzes in there," Roethlisberger said of the player who had been the Steelers' third-down back before seriously hurting his knee last October.

This could spell the end for Reid. If you can't stay on the field there is no room for you on the roster.

This could come as good news for the Dallas Baker fans, but who will take on the job of returns.

Hopefully somebody who wont fumble it every time they touch it.
If that foot is still bothering Reid after this long he's not gonna make an entire season with out getting hurt again, so ya he may not make the team.

The end for Reid? You do know this is just the OTA's. It was "tender" so they decided to take the "safe" route. He is coming off a foot sprain that is one of the slowest healing injuries you can rehab. I promise you this. We do not have a better return man on the roster. The next closest thing is Santonio Holmes and do you want your starting split end out there on Special teams getting lit up? Give him a chance to come back from the injury. This kid truly is a special return man on what has been a not so "special" teams unit. He had more career return yards than "Neon" Deion Sanders at FSU.

Exactly. you guys are crazy if you think this kid isnt going to make the roster. He was drafted to take over all our return duties, and we need him to be healthy to do that this year. Just give him a little time to rest and make sure the foot is 100%. I think this is more of a sign of how important he is to the ST unit ... meaning ... I think that if his spot was at risk, he would be sucking it up and giving it his all to try and impress/not get cut.

They know how dangerous he is. I even read somewhere, some clip-it off an article posted on this MB, that reid was showing "mad return skills" (or something in that ballpark) during one of the previous OTA's.

Now, if this turns out to be a problem during THIS season, then I can clearly see him on his way out afterwards.

All I can say about this is that it does bother me and worry me that he cannot spend hardly anytime on the field without oooo my foot hurts. It does not take almost a year for a foot sprain to heal. So if we cannot keep him on the field without him going down with a foot problem then there is a issue there and a most concerning one that would dictate that he will be nothing no more then a injury prone foot man. So hopefully everything is ok and we get him all season.

I want him out there every kickoff and every punt, he has mad skills for the position and we need him.

Mild midfoot sprains usually heal within a few weeks, whereas more severe sprains may take up to two months.

He's had since October to rest. I think that the concern expressed by other posters is that if he isn't ready after nearly 8 months, he's unlikely to be ready in another month or 2. I understand that this is just precautionary, but it does cause concern that he's still under the influence of an 8 month old injury.

Hold on guys, I'm with you. I want to see Reid out there returning for us, I'm just saying that if he can't stay healthy he will be cut. Back when Reid saw the foot sprain turn into a season-ending injury, there was some speculation that the injury was more of a Lisfranc injury than just a sprain. If this is the case that is bad news.
