Default best first rounder?

i was just reading about timmons, and it got me thinking about pittsburgh recent draft picks. i feel the steelers have done quite well with their draft picks. they have always underpaid for quality (premiere) players due to their position in the draft.

holmes(2006), heath miller(2005), rothlisberger(2004), Polamalu(2003), simmons(2002)

it made me wonder, who was the best first rounder in the last five years?

Ben seems like the obvious answer, but how can you count out heath and troy? both have paid back in a big way!

will holmes step up this year show us he is well worth it? with a new offense, we can only hope.

time will tell with timmons. let's just hope that the streak continues!

If you are posing the question who has been our best first round choice recently then Ben is my choice. Why?

*Consensus top ten draft pick that fell to us. ( first round pick with the most value for the pick used,)

*Delivery under pressure as a rookie when Maddox went down. (most value in rookie season)

*Superbowl victory in second season ( who has ever down that as a QB)

* Crashed a bike and suffered an appendix disaster and still got back on the field to contribute.

* Instictive leadership that inspired seasoned veterans when all seemed doomed early in his rookie season.

Hands down its Big Ben. ( I bet the Giants would love to have their pick at QB in that draft over again.)

I'll go with Troy Polamalu. Ben Roethlisberger fell through the 1st round and landed on the Steelers lap. The Steelers had to do some finagling to get Polamalu.

i think big ben most definitley. The aquisition of ben ultimitaly landed us a superbowl. but every first rounder since about 97 has been a huge contributor to this team.

ben is a QB that an organization gets once every 15-20 years. polamalu is a safety that an organization gets every 50yrs. ben is a great qb in a better system that is why he is thought of as being overrated. ben didnt have to go into an organization like peyton or like carson so some think he is just good because he is on a good team. polamalu when healthy is the best safety in the league and could be a future hall of famer. polamalu can flip around an organizations defense by himself.so overall i would say polamalu is more valuable at the moment.

To me it's Troy, he is no ordinary safety, even though both he and Ben had down seasons last season, but maybe after this season Ben will be considered a better 1st round pick.

Id have to go with Ben. Ben had amazing first two season. Sure he had a down season but look what he went threw. Its his year to bounce back from all of that and become the leader he needs to be to led us yet again to the SB.

I'm going to go with Ben here for the reason that our offense desperately needed a leader after both Kordodo and Maddox failed to fill that role. Ben has proven to be that leader and I don't think there is a one of us who can deny that. Yes- Troy is invaluable at his position and is one of the top 2 safeties in the NFL, but the Steelers' D had leaders before Troy's arrival. A defense can hold an opponent to minimal yards and points, but if a team's offense doesn't work together as a unit to produce and do their part to secure that "V", it doesn't matter how well the defense performs. A viable contender needs a distinguished field general and imho, Ben fits the bill perfectly.
