Default Timmons Re-injured!

Timmons re-injures groin
Thursday, July 26, 2007

LATROBE, Pa. ? Rookie cornerback William Gay blitzed off the edge, which forced Charlie Batch to hurry a throw into the flat. There, was linebacker Lawrence Timmons, who made a good read on the route and made the interception.

It was just a single snap of a morning workout tucked within the first week of training camp, but since Timmons is the Steelers' No. 1 draft pick its importance was magnified.

But when Timmons subsequently reported feeling a twinge in the same groin that bothered him throughout the offseason program and missed Thursday's afternoon practice as a result, the point of interest returned to that one uncooperative muscle.

"He felt a little twinge," said Coach Mike Tomlin. "We're just being cautious. We don't want to take any steps backward as we move forward. We'll take a look at him tonight and go from there, but until that point he did make a play or two this morning."

On the day this camp opened, which also was the day Timmons signed his rookie contract, he said that even though he was healthy he planned to be smart about his situation because he didn't want to rush anything and regress. At the time, it sounded like the typical uncertainty of a rookie, but today his reticence made a lot more sense.

"I'm healthy, but I'm going to take it day-to-day, not rush anything," said Timmons on Monday. "Rehabilitating is not like working all the necessary muscles like you do when you go out and go full speed. I'm going to be smart about it. I'm 100 percent. I'm good to go. But I just want to be smart about the whole situation."

As Tomlin says often, injuries are a part of football, and during training camp injuries are chronicled closely, and much of the theme of the post-practice gathering with the media centered around them.

Besides Timmons, Santonio Holmes, the No. 1 pick in 2006, remains sidelined as the result of a minor surgical procedure that is non-football related.

"Getting a little impatient, but that's part of it," said Tomlin. "Any time you miss an opportunity to get better you do (have a danger of falling behind). But he's a talented guy, he's a sharp guy. He's working on his mental game, I'm sure. He'll create opportunities for himself to catch up."

On the other end of the health spectrum, Willie Reid is back after missing nine games last season with a foot injury and then sitting out the final batch of OTAs with a different foot injury. Reid has not missed a snap thus far in training camp, and he is a key ingredient in the team's ability to return punts and kickoffs.

"It's good to see him back and healthy and with that smile on his face," said Tomlin. "Willie has a great personality, he is a natural worker. He's getting better, and we need him to do that."

Besides Timmons, there were no other additions to the Steelers injury list, and Tomlin sees that as a major positive because keeping guys on the field is the only way to help them improve.

"When you watch guys and check their level of preparation, it's a testament to the offseason program," said Tomlin. "(LaMarr) Woodley has distinguished himself a little bit because he's been healthy and able to get a repetition or two. Lawrence has to make up some ground. It's not earth-shattering, but it's the reality of it."

STEELERS NOTES: The practice on Friday that's open to the public will begin at 7 p.m. at Latrobe Stadium. It will be preceded by a 15-minute autograph session, beginning at 6:45 p.m. Following practice, fans will be treated to a Zambelli Internationale fireworks display. Admission for the practice is $3 for adults 18-65 and $1 for children under 18 and senior citizens. Children under 12 will be admitted for free if accompanied by a parent. Tickets will be sold at the gate. Proceeds benefit the Greater Latrobe School District Athletic Program.

"We'll hit an element of situational football like we always do," said Tomlin. "But it'll be the exact same practice that occurs at 2:55 p.m.; it just happens a little later on. Hopefully, it's entertaining. We'll see."
