Pirates tap Bayliss in bullpen roster move Sunday, July 29, 2007 By Chuck Finder, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette The roster move the Pirates made today, replacing John Van Benschoten, involved a familiar bullpen name: Jonah Bayliss. This right-handed reliever, who opened the season with the Pirates, returned after a monthlong stint in Class AAA Indianapolis. There he went 3-2 with a 6.46 ERA and struck out 11 batters in 15 1/3 innings. After a solid September last season with the parent club, Bayliss this year went 4-3 with a 7.53 ERA and struggled a bit throwing strikes, evidenced by a .315 opponents' batting average, before being optioned to Indianapolis June 24. Van Benschoten (0-5) was sent to Indianapolis after losing his past three decisions, all while allowing five or more runs and failing to escape the third inning. He will be replaced in the rotation for now by Tony Armas.
