Default Steelers 2-for-2 in two-minute drill

Steelers 2-for-2 in two-minute drill
By Mike Prisuta
Thursday, August 9, 2007

The Steelers offense continued to hum Wednesday afternoon as QBs Ben Roethlisberger and Charlie Batch directed two-minute drives that reached the end zone. Roethlisberger hit WR Nate Washington for a TD against the first-team defense. Batch connected with WR Water Young for a scoring strike against the second-team unit. The two QBs combined for just one incompletion, and that occurred when Batch threw a ball away to avoid a sack and stop the clock.

More line dancing: C Sean Mahan returned from his excused absence/personal reasons departure Friday and took over in the middle of the first-team offensive line for the first time. Mahan said his personal matter has been dealt with and that he doesn't anticipate any resulting complications affecting his ability to compete for the starting job. Coach Mike Tomlin is anticipating Mahan starting at center and Willie Colon at right tackle on Saturday night against Green Bay.

Max factor: Max Starks, who until Tuesday was working as the No. 1 right tackle, was second at left tackle behind Marvel Smith for a second consecutive day. Starks also got some work at left tackle with the first-team offensive line.

Good timeout: Roethlisberger called a timeout, a practice rarity, during 11-on-11 work. On the next play, he hit a long pass to TE Heath Miller.

Catch of the day: TE Jon Dekker made a spectacular, diving reception of a Batch pass.

Poochie, Poochie, Poochie: P Daniel Sepulveda worked on his "Aussie Style" punting, inducing the ball to bounce back upfield away from the goal line two times in three tries. The second of his three attempts was fair caught.

If at first you don't succeed: Tomlin found the tempo sub-standard at the outset of yesterday afternoon's workout, but was pleased his players managed to rally and make it a productive day.
"They started a little slow, but they didn't let it define the practice, and that's what we talked about at the end," Tomlin said. "There are going to be situations where maybe we don't come out of the locker room on fire. We gotta play through it and turn the volume up. I thought they did that today."
