Default Steelers release LB King; re-sign rookie Retkofsky

Steelers release LB King; re-sign rookie Retkofsky
Monday, August 13, 2007

By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers today released rookie linebacker Matt King and re-signed rookie long-snapper Jared Retkofsky.

Retkofsky was released by the Steelers four days before training camp opened. King was signed last week after rookie linebacker Marcello Church was released.

The re-signing of Retkofsky came two days after the Green Bay Packers' blocked a Jeff Reed extra point attempt in a 13-9 Steelers loss Saturday in Heinz Field. Green Bay's Michael Montgomery bolted between long-snapper Greg Warren and right guard Chris Kemoeatu to block the kick.

Warren served as the Steelers long-snapper the past two seasons and was the only long-snapper in training camp until Retkofsky was re-signed. It was not immediately known whether the signing was a reaction by Coach Mike Tomlin, who has put extra emphasis and practice time on special teams play this summer, to the blocked kick and whether or not it was Warren's fault.

Retkofsky (6-5, 260) played at TCU, where he was a reserve defensive lineman and the team's long-snapper.

I hope this isn't just a knee-jerk reaction to getting the extra point blocked the other night.

It's good to see that Tomlin is not simply waiting around to see how the rest of the preseason pans out before he makes adjustments and decisions in order to get our ST unit ready and playing at a NFL level. I like it.

I've been thinking, do we really need Greg Warren on the team, can't just some other lieman or backup lineman take that job. That's a roster spot we could use if we don't have warren. Though he's been great for us, not perfect, but a good player, that could easily be replaced

Sure is nice to see a head coach react to what was happening.

Warren was never much of a blocker and from what I saw during that Packers game, he blew his assignment which allowed the inside charge on the blocked kick. Maybe that was the final straw? What does this move say about him? Bringing in a rookie LS to take/compete for your job.

I'm just happy Tomlin is not waiting until the end of September when the problem actually hurts us, to nip this problem in the butt or taking the nonchalant wait and see approach with this situation.

And hopefully we can pay him less money although I dont imagine Warren makes much anyway.

I'd say having someone who can consistently get a good snap off on a field goal attempt or pat is more important than who fills the 6th wide out position, or 8th linebacker spot. How often do players that deep in the roster even play? On the other hand, the long- snapper will play in a number of plays in every game - many times in game winning situatons.

Also, I'd doubt if any of our centers have much experience with snapping on fgs or pats. I know Okobi hasn't snapped much in the past years. Mahan has been playing guard so that's probably a ditto. I am not sure about Marvin Phillip, but since many colleges use specialists for long-snaps, it would surprise me if he had much experience.

in 2005, the year of our sb run we cut veteran long snapper mike schneck in favor of udfa g. warren in a move that saved $500,000. the move didnt hurt us winning a sb.

i believe a long snapper who is trained in that specialty is important. (c. gardocki never had a punt blocked) and its too late to start training some back up to do it.

warren hasnt been bad and is no more expensive than who we brought in today. id prefer having the veteran who has performed on the biggest stage. hopefully this is just to send a message. perhaps retkofsky turns out to be the better man. either way, it is a pro active approach and isnt just the lip service we have become accustomed to.

i wonder what hines ward thinks of the potential of warren losing his job???

To the former, Thank goodness. To the latter, I think he knows that it doesn't matter at this point what he thinks. Again, thank goodness.
