Default Prisuta's 53

2007 Steelers taking shape

By Mike Prisuta
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Tuesday, August 14, 2007

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said his focus heading into the Green Bay game was not to make any final decisions, and he reiterated Monday he intends to stick to the plan of not rushing the evaluation process.

He has his agenda. I have mine.

That being the case, let's assume for the moment the way the Steelers lined up against the Packers on Saturday night betrayed the direction in which they're headed.

You didn't want to wait until Sept. 1 to figure out the Final 53, did you?

Forty-eight players were used on the first- and second-team offenses and defenses and on the "starting" special teams before the substituting got out of hand.
They were:

Quarterback (2): Ben Roethlisberger and Charlie Batch.

Running back (4): Najeh Davenport, Dan Kreider, Verron Haynes and Carey Davis.

Wide receiver (6): Hines Ward, Cedrick Wilson, Nate Washington, Santonio Holmes, Willie Reid and Walter Young.

Tight end (3): Heath Miller, Matt Spaeth and Jerame Tuman.

Offensive line (7): Marvel Smith, Chris Kemoeatu, Sean Mahan, Kendall Simmons, Willie Colon, Max Starks and Trai Essex.

Defensive line (6): Aaron Smith, Casey Hampton, Brett Keisel, Chris Hoke, Travis Kirschke and Nick Eason.

Linebacker (7): Clark Haggans, Larry Foote, James Farrior, LaMarr Woodley, Rian Wallace, Clint Kriewaldt and Arnold Harrison.

Defensive back (10): Ike Taylor, Troy Polamalu, Anthony Smith, Deshea Townsend, Bryant McFadden, Ryan Clark, Tyrone Carter, Ricardo Colclough, William Gay and Chidi Iwuoma.

Specialists (3): Greg Warren, Jeff Reed and Daniel Sepulveda.

Four players didn't dress against the Packers who are destined to make the Final 53.

The addition of Willie Parker, Alan Faneca, James Harrison and Lawrence Timmons jacks our total to 52.

Make it five running backs, eight offensive linemen and nine linebackers.

Except nine linebackers is one too many, so scratch Wallace and make it eight linebackers among our almost-famous 51.

And eight offensive linemen is one too few. We still need a backup center, someone that has done more than dabble at snapping.

Marvin Philip gets the nod over Chukky Okobi (position flexibility; Philip is a better guard), making it nine offensive linemen on the fabulous 52.

And Brian St. Pierre survives as the No. 3 QB because Tomlin apparently is a three-quarterback guy.

That makes it three QBs and 53 on the roster.

Except that leaves defensive lineman Ryan McBean exposed on the practice squad.

He's not ready yet, but the Steelers badly need an infusion of youth along the defensive line.

So, McBean gets a spot and someone else has to go.

Kreider, a fullback in an offense that's evolving away from the need for one, is firmly on the bubble.

Young is, too.

His will burst, making it five wide receivers, seven defensive linemen and 53 members of the 2007 Steelers.

See you in Cleveland.

Just some thoughts:

I would not keep Haynes over Russell. IMO, Haynes is too injury prone...and has been throughout his career...and Russell has shown something in preseason.

With the way Starks looked last game against GB at LT, there is no way we can trust him to play that position during an actual game. Thus, this saved Essex job because he has experience playing there a couple years ago.

I think Anthony Madison could knock Chidi out of the roster.

I think it is a shame that there is no room for Walter Young. I would keep him over someone like a Ryan McBeam on the roster. I like Young and his size. Every year, he has had a decent camp, but there is never any room for him.

I understand keeping Philip over Okobbi, but has Philip even played this preseason?

I'd have to agree here with Prisuta with the exception being his assessment of the team's need for a FB, in particular - Dan Kreider. The guy is solid and the run is still going to be a prominent part of the Steelers O, even though they are going to do more with the pass this season. He's still one of the best in the league at blocking and leading the way for his RB - the Steelers most definitely need Dan Kreider as part of that final 53.

I rather keep Kreider then three QBs.......I think there is no need to keep three on the final 53.....If you cut St. Pierre just keep him on speed dial if you end up needing him down the road...lol I'm sure there won't be a big demand for his sorry ass....lol

But here is the thing about Dan Kreider.......He really is just a blocking FB...He doesn't get many touches ever......With the Steelers hinting at using more single back and multi TE/WR sets its going to limit the need for a FB that just blocks....I think it would be foolish to cut him to since there is going to be situations during the season were you're going to need a Dan Kreider and his blocking.......But the whole NFL is really getting away from using a FB on a full time basis....The FB position is really becoming extinct anymore....I have a feeling though Kreider makes the final 53.....Only way I see him being cut if Carey Davis shows to be a better blocker or just as good of blocker as Dan Kreider....

Gary Russell...

Better hang onto Haynes so Ben has someone to throw that 3 and 13 dump pass to....

I really don't see Kreider going anywhere, at least this year.

Ok here is my thought:

3 QBs Tomlin doesn't seem the typr to leave things to chance - like hoping a guy will still be around.
4 backs
1 FB
6 Wideouts
9 O'linemen
3TE's
6 D'linemen
8 L'backers
10 Defensive backs
3 Special teamers - punter, kicker and long-snapper.

If they go with 10 db's then Chidi stays on the team. If we keep an extra linebacker (we are thin at inside) or an extra O'linemen (never have too much) then I’d say we only keep 9 dbs and Chidi might be gone.

While I agree with Prisuta about needing youth on the D'line, you don't keep youth just for the sake of saying you have youth. In a 3-4 set it is vital that all three d'linemen at least hold there position and occupy at least one blocker. If you have lineman in a 3-4 who can't hold the line the entire defense becomes ineffective. Ryan Mc Bean has shown me nothing that proves he is that guy. He gets pushed around and the Steelers can't have that. Mc Bean is a practice squad guy who you hope you don't lose, but you won't cry if you do.

Too early, and if the "experts" don't know enough yet, how could the fans possibly know more? It's even worse because there is a new coach.

True, with Cowher the edge always went to the vet.

It's a message board, and everyone wants to speculate, so you'll have "this". But nobody really knows squat, and I like it that way.
