Default Defense looks familiarly fearsome

Steelers defense looks familiarly fearsome

By John Harris
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Saturday, August 18, 2007

It's not a big deal that the Steelers play a 3-4 defense.

It's how they play the 3-4.

A lot of teams play a lot of 3-4. The Steelers play defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau's 3-4 with a sprinkle of coach Mike Tomlin's 4-3 and a little Cover-2 mixed in.

The Steelers offer teams a million pre-snap looks. They trick, they play straight-up, and they blitz from every conceivable angle, all so they can arrive at the ball angry and with the ability to tackle, intimidate and create a turnover.

Playing defense is what the Steelers do best.

There are several questions about the offense: Will there be more passes and fewer running plays? Who will start at center and right tackle? Can the offensive line protect quarterback Ben Roethlisberger better than it did last year?

On defense, there are no such worries as the Steelers visit the Washington Redskins tonight in their third exhibition game.

"We have a bunch of proud men on this team, especially on defense," defensive end Aaron Smith said. "Since I've been here, the defense has been a special group of guys."

Make that an angry, special group of guys.

Last season, the Steelers finished 8-8 and out of the playoffs a year after winning Super Bowl XL.

While the defense remained stout against the run -- "Nobody runs the ball on us," inside linebacker Larry Foote said -- there were holes in pass coverage and a less aggressive pass rush.

Smith said the Steelers "want to prove something."

In the first two exhibition games, the first-team defense didn't allow a point and shut down quarterbacks Drew Brees and Brett Favre.

During training camp, the defense proved it was weeks ahead of the offense.

Before a 11-on-11 series between the first-team offense and defense, LeBeau told the offense, "I've got something for you," or words to that effect.

On the first play, Roethlisberger couldn't locate an open receiver and had to scramble out of bounds with outside linebacker James Harrison nipping at his heels. Later in the series, Roethlisberger forced a throw under pressure and was intercepted.

Around the league, the Steelers defense is already getting rave reviews.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson told the Tribune-Review he wouldn't be intimidated by the Steelers, while admitting he hasn't had much success against them recently.

Smith's response? "People think we talk a little bit too much and maybe we're bullies, but we're a physical football team."

And this: "I think as a unit we're playing better than (previous years). Guys are a little bit more comfortable, maybe a little bit more confident. The younger guys have more experience. We've been together a long time, so that helps too. We play off each other because we know each other's personalities. We play hard for each other, because we are so close.''

Looks like the defense is getting its swagger back.

Good read. I love our controlled confusion type of D. It really give the offense, especially the o-line, trouble. Cant wait to see what Coach Tomlin and Coach LeBeau have stired up for us this season.

Nice read, but I'd rather see what this new Steelers defense does in real action once the season starts. If this holds up, I look forward to seeing our secondary improve.

For once, he's being honest. While I don't blame for saying he's not intimidated.......fear the "D", Ocho Stinko. (I'm betting he gets the night sweats thinking abut the Steeler D!!)

Good - I'm glad he's not intimidated. That's it, Chad, just go over the middle....

The D is going to be filled with Troy, Keisel and Anthony Smith, those 3 alone will create havok
everywhere. CJ is gonna get crushed this year,I expect 1 catch for him in two games against us
