Default Bengals Eyeing Steelers' Gary Russell?

If/when the Steelers cut him, I wouldn't mind seeing him as a Bengal.

August 14th, 2007 by Neal Coolong
You might remember him. A WR from UCLA named Danny Farmer. I doubt it, but you might. He was a fourth-round pick of the Steelers in 2000, and was a tough cut at the end of training camp. The Steelers hoped to get him on the practice squad, but he didn?t make it. He was picked up by Cincinnati.

Farmer?s career has been less than spectacular.

Another WR that comes to mind on this topic is Fred Gibson. Also a fourth-round pick, Gibson came from Georgia, but did not make the team. They hoped to get him on the practice squad too, but he was nabbed by Miami, then Atlanta, and is now with the Rams.

Neither were great losses, but neither had spectacular camps, either. RB Gary Russell sure has. If drafted no-men like Farmer and Gibson are given second-chances, why wouldn?t Russell?

And which team in the AFC North is currently in need of a running back? The Cincinnati Bengals.

With second-round pick Kenny Irons out for the year with a knee injury, the Bengals are suddenly in need of a complement to the aging but fantastic Rudi Johnson. The Steelers will face a difficult time keeping the undrafted Minnesota product Russell, considering veteran Verron Haynes? blocking ability and experience as the team?s third-down back when healthy.

Former Bengals locker room cancer Corey Dillon was brought up. The Bengals team page quotes coach Marvin Lewis as saying ?It?s not anything I?ve really thought about,? in reference to re-signing Bengals career rushing leader. But they clearly wanted a change-of-pace back to compliment Johnson. And if Russell is available on the cheap (probably 1/10th of the price of Dillon, and with no guaranteed money, can easily be cut next year if necessary), don?t think they won?t come looking for him.

What?s more, Russell would come equipped with the working knowledge of the Steelers offense, making him an even better compliment to the sagging Bengals run defense than the offense.

He wouldn't be able to help your run defense, because none of your linebackers know how to tackle.

doesnt neal write articles for steelersfever too? nice speculative piece. its not going to far for me to say if the steelers cut st. pierre he will be on the bengals roster quicker than it takes a cop to read chris henry his rights.

this however is a bit of a reach:

he would be snagged for his talent, not his extensive knowledge of the playbook.

along with st. pierre, and russell, i think the bengals would be improved by getting rian wallace if he is cut (and possibly walter young if you dont get kelly washington back). i think they will be watching our waver wire very closely.

in terms of russell, tomlin has already said they can possibly keep 6 backs and i wouldnt be against this at all. it may spell the end of iwouma or essex but i dont think either of them have the upside or starter capabilities that russell has. he simply seems like a better player.

The thing is, St. Pierre isn't gonna have the new playbook memorized. A lot of stuff got changed, it's not the same playbook from the Cowher regime.

Did the knoledge he had of the old Steelers playbook probally help the Ravens? Yes, more than likley. They already had a good defense. Knowing what was coming already helped even more.

However, the Bengals don't know much about playing defense. And the system has changed so taking any of the Steelers that are cut won't be much help.

If they take any cut Steelers, it's because they need the talent and depth, not information on the playbook.

My bet is that the Bengals don't get a chance at him; we're keeping this guy.

He's just trying to get people fired up over nothing. He probably saw an old NFL films episode that said Pittsburgh fans hate the Cowboys because of the "Americas Team" comments. I think we answered this question on the field 2 - 1.

To CS85 I would say:

49ers - Struck Gold when they played the Bungals!
