Default Cowher- "I Will Not Coach in 2008"

"its official"

as per solomon wilcots, who just returned from a seminar/meeting in NYC with all the figures of cbs sports production. i find this interresting cause coach wasnt saying it in an interview or to some local news reporter. he was saying it to all of the cbs executives and a room of his peers.

solomon said it was pretty emphatic, and not as much as he was committing to cbs but he was committed to his family for the next 2 years. as someone who played for cowher, he said he is not the type of guy to get up there and lie, and not the type of guy to pull a "bill parcells" (his words)

I guess he is pretty confident Jones will not be firing Phillips after 1 year or, if he changes his mind, whatever job he takes in 2008 will be "a dream come true" that he never thought would be available.

To the extent you believe Cowher on his 2008 plans, consider this statement in today's NYT:

A year ago, Cowher was upset that a former player, Jerome Bettis, who retired to work for NBC, said that last season was going to be Cowher?s final one with the Steelers. ?I said back then that he was being speculative,? he said. ?It turns out he was accurate. I didn?t take it personally.?

Yeah Bill, nobody had a clue last fall that you might be leaving.

it's largely speculated that the browns will offer cowher full control here in cleveland. If cowher isnt back in 08 he will be back by 2009 for sure

Default Bill Cowher: Not Coaching in 2007 or 2008

I think it could be as many as five years, as relaxed as he looked duing that KDKA interview....
**********************************************
By Jim Corbett, USA TODAY

Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher broke some news behind closed doors in his introductory meeting with his new CBS teammates during last week's network seminar.
"Bill came in to have a few words with our group and said, 'I'm not coaching this year, or in 2008,' " CBS analyst Solomon Wilcots says. "It surprised me, only because you know he's going to be in demand, despite saying that. There's still going to be owners who believe they can woo him and will come after him.

"But I don't think it's based just on Bill's commitment to TV. It's more that he wants to see his (two older) daughters play basketball at Princeton."

Wilcots, who played for Cowher in the coach's 1992 rookie season in Pittsburgh, recalled a phone call when his wife's water broke before Cowher's first playoff game. Cowher told his defensive back to stay with his wife.

"Family is important to Bill, trust me," Wilcots says.

Says Tony Petitti, executive vice president and producer for CBS Sports, "Obviously, we know he's going to be sought after as a coach at some point. But with Bill Cowher, there's no doubt we're taking an already strong show (The NFL Today) and making it better.

"He's going to see where he is after that. But he said he's going to do this for a couple of seasons."

Skeptics will insist Cowher is just driving up his stock and will wonder how Cowher will react when some owner makes a lucrative offer after an abysmal 2007 start ? or finish.

But a tanned, leaner Cowher, 50, doesn't regret stepping away after 15 seasons in Pittsburgh. "We're spending Labor Day weekend at the beach," Cowher says. "I haven't been able to do that since I started coaching. ? This allows football to be a big part of my life but not an all-consuming part."

thanks alittlejazzbird.

espn's "sportscenter" just ran this story like it was new news.

it reminds me when the jets GM (tannenbaum?) was on adam schein's and wilcot's radio show on sirius and he broke the news to them for the 1st time, that kevin curtis had just been signed as a free agent. within 15 minutes sal paolantonio was reporting the "BREAKING NEWS" for espn. they werent exactly livid but they were talking much shit about it as they clowned him and made fun of how desperate the rating whoring was.

nfl radio definitely doesnt thump their chest when they have a juicy nugget. its quite respectable.

It's a little early to be putting any stock in these statements. No matter how strongly he feels about staying retired, there's still a chance he'll change his mind over the course of his first season out of the NFL.
