Is anyone else watching this? I watch every year. It's just pure baseball, no ego's, no paychecks, no agents, no bling, no steroids (at least not yet, I hope!). These kids play really fundamentally sound baseball, and they do it just out of the love of the game. It's also amazing to see the international contingency. Baseball is truly a World sport.

I watch it every year myself, and I enjoy it for the same reasons revefsreleets highlighted, but I did run across this article (which I strongly disagree with, personally) and would like a few other folks' take on it:

This guy is WAY off. Do you think these kids are aware that the camera's are on them once the game starts? I doubt it. I know for sure that I wouldn't want 3 people to see me cry after I lost a baseball game, let alone my whole school, and forget about the whole world!
As for ESPN, this is the perfect storm for "Damned if you do and damned if you don't". ESPN makes a ton of money from individual subscriber fee's it charges cable and dish companies, and they are, after all a business, so why not make more money when and where they can? If people watch it, they sell commercials. Duh. But think about the deeper issue. MLB's TV ratings have pretty much trended down, and why not? I could care less about Barry (650 HR's naturally tops) Bonds, and the TV ratings I'm sure reflect that I was in the majority. As I get older, I feel less and less sympathy for multiple millionaires holding teams ransom for an extra million because they "want to secure their families future". Please. But I love the sport of baseball, and I played Little League baseball, and these kids embody everything that's right about it. If Little League makes some cash, good for them. Maybe they can take baseball to some tribe in Central America that no one has ever even heard of.

That's pretty amazing, if you think about it. Georgia wins it two years in a row.

what a fantastic game....it is a shame that one team had to lose b.c they both played so well. Also, it is too bad about the pitch count rule, both pitchers were on a roll before they had to come out....
It was so classy of the Georgia team to reach out to the dissapointed Japanese kids at the end of the game. Nice to see those boys were taught how to be good winners. Talk about 2 evenly matched teams - it could have gone either way. |
