Australian rugby league great Andrew Johns says he has been a fool and getting caught with an ecstasy tablet in London is a black mark on his reputation.

The retired Newcastle, NSW and Kangaroos star, regarded by many as rugby league's greatest player, was issued with an official caution for possession of an ecstasy tablet in London on Sunday.

In a statement, he said the ecstasy tablet was pushed into a pocket of his jeans at a crowded club by an "unknown" person.

As I type this story Andrew Johns is being interviewed live on television admitting that he has been a drug user throughout his football career (12 plus years) and how the above story was a lie used to get out of the UK without being arrested. Now that he is back in Australia he is explaining how he managed to avoid regular drug tests for recreational drugs (ecstacy)

This guy is an icon of Rugby League football in Australia and he is pouring his heart out asking for sympathy. He is sorry that he has let the fans and the kids down.

I am sick of these prima donnas in all sports thinking that a simple sorry will make their illegal activities go away and the fans will instantly forgive. This issue is a world wide problem that just seems like it will never go away.

I am keen to here of any views about this global sports trend. I am a tolerant fan but even I am becoming very jaded.

When I watch a Vick, Jones, Henry and Thurman get arrested I simply shake my head because I know they will get a free pass for the most part. Yeah, they get that slap on the wrist, but I know one thing.......if the Federal goverment came down on me, we wouldn't be talking about me getting my job back in one year after I get out of prison. Maybe at a McDonalds? If I "made it rain" at a strip club and somebody in my "posse" paralyzed a man for life, I wouldn't be getting my job back.

Until the leagues and the judicial system in general start really cracking the whip on these guys, it will continue. Arrest after arrest, slap on the wrister after slap on the wrist. It's a joke.

Leonard Little is a perfect example.....

After a drunken birthday in 1998, NFL star Leonard Little crashed into and killed another motorist, Susan Gutweiler. When tested, his blood alcohol level measured 0.19 percent. Little received 90 days in jail, four years probation and 1000 hours of community service.

Six years later, Little was again arrested for drunk driving and speeding. Little was acquitted of driving while intoxicated, but was convicted of the misdemeanor speeding charge.

On Week 11 of the 2006 NFL season, Little signed a 3-year extension with the Rams.

That girl is in a grave, this piece of trash is making millions while playing in the NFL.

Average wage in Australia is under $40000 and none of those battlers get a second chance for any criminal indescretion. They cant afford legal representation and the long term effects for most of them is detrimental to all that are associated with them (especially the kids) forever.

The football stars however use it to gain a new side to their image. Streed cred with the thugs and sympathy from the gullible. It is funny how money and image can be the difference between you smelling like Sh*t or smelling like roses.

I agree Aussie - and apologies for disagreeing on a previous thread, the beeb appears to be many hours behind everyone else when it comes to international sports news lol!

one of my favourite parts is how the NRL are saying their drugs testing poilcy is fine, despite how Johns explains in great detail how easy it is to avoid getting caught!

The NRL has a two month period after the season where players cannot be drug tested. Its the off season for everybody or should I say the OFF YOUR HEAD season.

It has been long rumoured in Australia that many of our league players are users. Rumours range from players like Paul Harrigan and Andrew Ettingshausen retiring early because of multiple failed tests.

A good friend of mine is related to Trent Barrett (now in the UK) and he has long claimed that Johns also played HIGH. Another guy I worked with was a gym instructor in Newcastle and said that he knew about steriod and drug use by the knights team.

It is all starting to unravel in Australia with many players starting to call each other out about the use of drugs.
