Good luck with Nutting, your going to need it buddy.....
FOX reports MLB chief labor lawyer to be named Pirate's new president Saturday, September 08, 2007 By Paul Meyer FOX television reported today that Frank Coonelly, Major League Baseball's chief labor lawyer, will be the Pirates' new president. Bob Nutting, the Pirates' chairman of the board, confirmed he'd talked with Coonelly. "But it would be premature to make any kind of announcement,'' Nutting said. "It would be premature for me to say Frank is my choice. It would be unfair to the other candidates.'' It's believed, though, that there is -- or was -- only other candidate. That would be Chuck Greenberg, who owns the Pirates' State College and Altoona farm clubs. "Frank is an extremely bright person and a capable individual,'' Nutting said. "If you talk to people who run clubs, I think they'd say, 'You're lucky to get him' -- if we're able to do so. Officially, it's not a done deal.'' http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07251/815879-100.stm

Ehh.
I would like to see Greenberg considering he's familiar with the farm clubs and maybe would be a little more hesitant to trade away big potential guys for a box of Klondikes and perhaps put up a fight with Nutting over it. I doubt it will matter in the end, anyway. I'm sure Nutting's looking for the part on the resume that says how well the candidate follows orders... Guess we'll have to see...

Based on the sequence of events, I'd guess Nutting had this guy lined up, but he didn't want to fire Littlefield himself, didn't want to be the hatchet man.

Pirates select Coonelly
Tuesday, September 11, 2007 By Paul Meyer, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Chuck Greenberg, believed to be the only other candidate in the Pirates' search for a new president, today said he'd been told by chairman of the board Bob Nutting that he wouldn't get the job and that the Pirates "have selected Frank Coonelly." Coonelly is Major League Baseball's chief labor counsel. It's still unclear when the Pirates will make the official announcement about Coonelly. Coonelly, 47, who began working for Major League Baseball in 1998, helps teams with salary arbitration cases and determines signing bonus slots for the amateur draft. He also is part of the negotiating team for collective bargaining agreements with the union and the umpires. A story in USA Today in April ranked Coonelly 12th on a list of the 50 most influential people in baseball. Coonelly would replace Kevin McClatchy, the Pirates' chief executive officer who officially announced July 6 he would step down from that position at the end of this season. McClatchy is expected to remain on the team's board of directors. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07254/816561-100.stm
