Default Legend Team Named (Before 1970)

Steelers name Legends Team of players before 1970
Tuesday, September 11, 2007
By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers today released their Legends Team as part of their 75th Season celebration.

The team was selected by a panel and includes those players who played prior to 1970. The Steelers entered the NFL in 1933.

The 24-member team will be honored at Sunday's game against Buffalo in Heinz Field, when the modern Steelers wear their throwback uniforms for the first of two times this season.

An All-75th Steelers team will be announced later in the season.

The Legends Team:

OFFENSE -- QB Bobby Layne, RB Dick Hoak, RB John Henry Johnson, TE Elbie Nickel, WR Roy Jefferson, WR Ray Mathews, C Chuck Cherundolo, G Mike Sandusky, G Bruce Van Dyke, T Charley Bradshaw, T Frank Varrichione.

DEFENSE -- DL Big Daddy Lipscomb, DL Ben McGee, DL Bill McPeak, DL Ernie Stautner, LB Dale Dodril, LB Myron Pottios, LB Jerry Shipkey, DB Jack Butler, DB/RB Bill Dudley, DB Howard Hartley, DB Clendon Thomas, P Pat Brady, K Armand Niccolai.

Wow...you forget how many good players were there pre 70's. I voted for John Henry Johnson as one of the RB's for the All Time Team. It was between him and Bettis (after Franco, of course).

Is that you on the right?

You looked surprised.

Haha. Cool pictures. I'd love to see some of those cards if you have them scanned or maybe have an image of the ones you have.

Yup, that is me on the right.
I was excited
I was telling my friend about him while we were looking at his bronze HOF bust and some guy behind me said that he was "over there". I freaked. A once in a life time chance to not only meet a HOFer but one that played back in the day for the Steelers to boot. I relive that moment almost daily. I will try and have the card up soon.
