Default Ticket exchange site slow off bench

Steelers ticket exchange site is slow off bench
By Chris Togneri
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Saturday, September 15, 2007

The Steelers' ticket exchange service appears to be wildly unpopular, but team officials say looks can be deceiving.

Started this summer, the service allows season ticket holders to sell tickets to games they don't want to attend through the Steelers' Web site, www.steelers.com.

It provides buyers a guarantee that the tickets are authentic, team spokesman Dave Lockett said, and makes it easier for holders to dump tickets they can't use.

"There's a comfort level," Lockett said. "Some people want to go to other (online auction) sites, but they're not guaranteed."

Only season ticket holders can sell tickets through the Steelers' service, and at no more than 25 percent above face value, Lockett said. They are charged a fee of 10 percent of the sale price, a ticket office employee said.

Ticket holders don't get cash for tickets they sell; their Steelers account is credited, Lockett said.

For much of the week leading up to Sunday's 1 p.m. home opener against the Buffalo Bills at Heinz Field, business appeared abysmal, with zero tickets posted for sale at the ticket exchange site.

In fact, for most of the week, no tickets for any game all year were on sale. The Tribune-Review checked the site more than a dozen times throughout the week and found one ticket for sale, posted at 4:20 p.m. Thursday for $82.50.

By contrast, online auction sites not affiliated with the Steelers had thousands of tickets for sale -- for Sunday's game and future games.

More than 100 tickets were for sale Thursday on eBay; stubhub.com had more than 200; and razorgator.com, more than 300. Ticket prices ranged from "best offer" to more than $1,000 for a pair.

At craigslist.org, a search for "Steelers tickets" netted 772 links to fans buying and selling tickets, including one man who offered to swap Penguins opening night tickets for a Steelers Monday night game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Lockett said the team's service is new and will gain popularity as more people hear about it.

The service is not meant to compete with online auction sites, but to provide an additional service for the team's fan base, he said.

David Eson, 42, of Mt. Lebanon, is not a fan of the service. He said he sells his father-in-law's unused tickets on eBay because he can turn a bigger profit, without having to pay the Steelers a 10 percent commission.

He said he resents the Steelers' bid to control ticket resales.

"You already have to pay for two exhibition games that no one wants to go to, and they're already trying to get rid of all the tailgating so you have to buy all your food inside," Eson said. "Enough is enough."

Lockett said many fans appreciate the service, despite the apparent lack of interest on the Web site. Many tickets have been bought and sold on the site, he said, but he did not know how many.

When tickets do go on sale, they often are snatched up within minutes, he said in explaining why it appears few tickets are ever posted on the site.

"They go quickly. It's a tribute to how great our fans are."

While I have absolutely no problem paying for preseason games, I do have a problem paying the same price I do for my regular season tickets. That is a crock of a .
