Last year, I was ready to say, "Thanks for the memories, Jeff.......buh bye." Now I'm thanking the football gods, (or whoever lit the fire under his butt!) that we have him!!
Steelers' Reed seizes on frequent opportunities By Scott Brown TRIBUNE-REVIEW Monday, September 24, 2007 Here is how well things are going for the Steelers: What passes for criticism of the team that is in the midst of a 3-0 start can also be looked at as a positive. Kicker Jeff Reed may be on the field too frequently for fans' liking, but he leads the NFL in scoring (37 points) and has made nine field goals in three games -- compared to 20 in 16 games a year ago. Of course, Reed has gotten so many field goal attempts because the Steelers' offense has not maximized its scoring opportunities. That doesn't diminish the fact that Reed, whose accuracy on field goals slipped last season, has been more accurate than DNA testing. Reed kicked three field goals Sunday, including a 49-yarder, in the Steelers' 37-16 win over the 49ers. He is 7 for 7 at Heinz Field, the same stadium where all seven of his missed field goals in 2006 occurred (overall, he was 20 of 27 in field goal attempts). What was particularly satisfying for Reed about Sunday: it marked the first time this season that he has kicked a field goal longer than 39 yards. "The 49 (yarder), that's the range that makes or breaks what you're really made of," said Reed, who is on pace to shatter his career best for points (124 in 2004). "As soon as it left my foot, I knew it was good." The ball didn't exactly graze the crossbar after splitting the uprights. Reed put enough of a charge into the kick that it looked like it would have been good from 59 yards, if not longer. Of course, leg strength has never been an issue with Reed. A soccer star in high school, Reed said he once kicked a 72-yard field goal during practice at the University of North Carolina. "There was a lot of wind behind me," Reed said. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is also behind Reed, and that could translate into the sixth-year pro getting more opportunities than in past seasons. "I do know Coach Tomlin will let me attempt much longer (fields goals) than coach (Bill) Cowher would have," Reed said. "Coach Tomlin, if there's wind behind me, I wouldn't be surprised if I (attempted) a 56- or 57-yarder." While Reed has gotten a chance to show off his right leg, Daniel Sepulveda has not gotten much of a chance to show how strong his left leg is. The rookie has punted just nine times this season, and many of those have come after a Steelers' drive has stalled, leaving Sepulveda with a short field. Sepulveda has dropped six of nine punts inside the 20-yard line. One of those came Sunday after Bryant McFadden saved Sepulveda's punt from going into the end zone and James Harrison downed it on the 49ers' 8-yard line. Sepulveda's punting and net average are both 38.7 yards because none of his kicks have been returned through the first three games. "I'm not used to having this many pooch punt opportunities," Sepulveda said. Reed's not used to having this many opportunities, period. That's been both a good and a bad thing for the Steelers. http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pitt.../s_529184.html |

Reed's been amazing this season and I just see him getting better, 59 yarder?? Try it, we'll never know if he never tries. I even put him on my fantasy leagues last week and will stay there for the rest of the season. Freaking kaeding was like 1 of 2 and didn't give me any points on some leagues

Reeds looking awsome this year but I hope that his field goal total goes down some and we finish off our drives better. Keep up the good work Jeff.

I always thought Jeff had a monster leg but could not keep up any consistancy....It makes me feel a lot better if we get into the postseason to have Redd continue to put them between the up-rights....Keep kicking em' Jeff.

[QUOTE=83-Steelers-43;299280] Tom Brady is putting up some SICK numbers QUOTE]
SICK It didn't help us that Randy Moss' head caught up with his ability at the point in his career when he landed with Brady. Here's to a NE team peaking too soon. The wind is behind our backs. And our sails are just still taking shape. So to beat the sailing anaolgy to death it could be all downwind into the bye. At some point we're going to tack into the wind and after seeing Reed kick one nearly into the river I'm getting the sense that we're 'weatherized' to make a run into the playoffs. |
