Steelers head into heart of schedule
Tomlin: Maintains cool in disappointing loss

Tuesday, October 02, 2007
By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

They lost a game and a handful of players Sunday; now the Steelers must confront even more bad news. The soft underbelly of their schedule ended with their 21-14 upset loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

NFL schedule makers did new coach Mike Tomlin a favor when they gave him four non-playoff teams for the first month of the season. That ends at 1 p.m. Sunday when the Seattle Seahawks come to Heinz Field for their Super Bowl XL rematch.

The Seahawks are 3-1 after a dominant win at San Francisco. After Seattle, the Steelers have a weekend off before they resume play at Denver, and then mix it up in their division with three consecutive games against their AFC North opponents.

"We'll take 3-1," defensive end Brett Keisel said. "We've got three wins. I'd rather be 3-1 than 1-3. I think we'll come ready to play Sunday."

The Steelers remain in decent company because only two teams remain unbeaten in the AFC, New England and Indianapolis, the two preseason favorites. A victory in Arizona would have given the Steelers a quick two-game lead in the division; as it is, they are a game ahead of surprising Cleveland, a team they trounced 34-7 on the road in the opener, and disappointing Baltimore, which lost to the Browns Sunday, 27-13.

Suddenly, the division that looked as though it might be among the best in the NFL does not appear as strong, and neither do the Steelers after their loss to the Cardinals.

"We just couldn't get it going," said quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who threw two perfect touchdown passes to Santonio Holmes but also tossed two interceptions, one from the Arizona 2 into the end zone. "We made a lot of mistakes, we killed ourselves. We had costly turnovers ... We shot ourselves in the foot."

It didn't help that Casey Hampton (hamstring) and Troy Polamalu (abdomen) missed most of the second half with injuries. The Steelers had no updates on those injuries yesterday, nor on the knee sprain that caused Hines Ward to miss only his fourth game in 10 years in the NFL.

"We pride ourselves on having depth on this team and guys have to step in and make plays," Keisel said. "Who knows if those guys are going to be back. We'll see."

Tomlin took his first loss the way he greeted his first three victories, with aplomb. He seemed suitably disappointed with the defeat in his postgame news conference, yet unriled. His players said that not only was his reaction on the field and in the locker room, but something they expected.

"He was pretty much the same," linebacker Larry Foote said. "He told us he was going to be the same guy. He's been telling us how it is since he's been here.

"He was still calm, cool. You could tell on his face he was still mad, disappointed. It's always like that, especially around here, people are down."

On Mondays, the Steelers gather and review the video of their Sunday game and are graded on it. The grades nor comments from Tomlin likely won't be as rosy as the ones handed out the first three weeks of the season, when they outscored their opponents, 97-26.

Tomlin considers the video of games the ultimate evidence of performance, a black-and-white examination with no excuses.

"What we did is on tape and we'll hopefully learn from the mistakes we made and learn for the long run," Keisel said. "I didn't think we played that awful. When we get them on their heels we need to go get them and not sit back."

Their was no comfort for Keisel or any other defensive player that their unit played well again. They still have not allowed a touchdown in the first half this season. The special teams allowed a score Sunday on a punt return.

"The codes we live by in terms of how we play our game and the way we seek victory, we didn't accomplish those," Tomlin said. "We didn't run the ball effectively, we didn't take advantage of turnovers in the game, we were highly penalized and special teams was not a winning edge for us. When you do those things, you're going to lose."

Tomlin handled his first NFL loss as a head coach well. He does not want more practice at it.

CLean Read, Thank you .

Umm I did See Tomlin Lose his Cool With Arians IN that Cardinal Game, and Arians was Yelling something back at Coach....

I just dont Want to "SEE" on the sidelines ANY kind of Digruntled Behavior from the players or coaches... Save it for teh Locker Room and Behind CLosed Doors... No one is Talking about, What i witnessed. But i saw it, and was dissapointed.

All im Saying is Get it Together. Mistakes If Corrected Are super Useful.

Everybody argues, I wouldn't worry about it! At least they didn't continue bickering like Carson and Chad did last night

The coaches will be fine as long as the execution on the field gets better.

Yes Winning Is not a good reason to Argue... But if you got it together neither is losing. INDY/NE Sidelines look like ours Normally does/should.

If there is a Problem be cool huddle up and make it happen... do not be Bickering... all im saying
