Default Mr. Smith no Mr. Nice Guy

Mr. Smith no Mr. Nice Guy
By John Harris
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sunday, November 18, 2007

As NFL free safeties go, the Steelers' Anthony Smith is straight out of central casting.
He's big, fast, strong, tough, and hits a ton.

Oh, and did we mention Smith has a mean streak that won't quit?

"I'm aggressive, physical and hard-hitting," said Smith, listing three of his best qualities.

Smith is 192 pounds of coiled, kinetic energy.
Built like an upside-down pyramid carved out of solid muscle, Smith creates an imposing presence just by walking around the locker room.

Sometimes Smith's temper takes over and he hurts his team by committing a penalty. He's a live wire starting for the NFL's top-rated defense.

Used to be the coaching staff could bottle Smith's emotions by dangling his playing time like a carrot.

Used to be.

With veteran Ryan Clark out for the season, the Steelers can't control Smith, they can only hope to contain him.

"That's part of the game," said Smith, who will make his fourth consecutive start as Clark's replacement today against the New York Jets.

On receiving a taunting penalty last week against Cleveland, Smith said, "There's a lot of talking going on. What (people) don't understand is either the referee is going to call it, or he's not. They don't call it every time. There's something going on every play. Whenever he decides to call it, he's going to call it. We have no control over that."

In other words, don't expect Smith to change his playing style anytime soon.

And when Smith gets in one of his moods, look out.

Just ask cornerback Ike Taylor, Smith's best friend on the team.

"Anybody has something to say to him, they'll come to me and ask, 'Can you calm him down?' " Taylor said. "I really don't tell him too much: 'Just stay under control. The game is on us. We don't want to put the offense in a bad situation.'

"I told him that and he looked at me like, 'You're not supposed to tell me that.' "

Taylor is playing big brother to Smith, following the example set when he joined the Steelers in 2003.

"When I came into the league, Deshea (Townsend) and James Farrior took me under their wings," Taylor said. "I like Smitty, he's hungry. He's got great instincts, great ball awareness. He's still got a lot to learn, but the best way to learn is by playing and that's what he's doing."

Smith does have a softer side. He's been a regular hospital visitor to see Clark, who had his spleen removed Thursday.

"We're good friends," Smith said Friday. "When I went the other day, he was actually in surgery, so I didn't get to see him. I'm going back today and check up on him and make sure everything's good."

To be sure, Smith doesn't treat all of his football friends so graciously.

"I'm friends with receivers on other teams. They see me on film and tell me they're looking out for me," Smith said.

"My big thing is stopping the big play. When guys come across the middle, I try to eliminate that, too."

Ouch.

Well - umm - yeah you do have some control over it. Keep your mouth shut.

I know he is a Steeler but Anthony Smith also appears to be working on developing a reputation as a punk who acts like he plays for the Ravens or Bengals.

If he gets flagged today for taunting IMO Tomlin and LeBeau will tear him a new one and perhaps sit him for a series to get a grip.

Make the play. Then shut your trap.

Go Steelers.

I can see his point that trash talking happens every play but he is failing to see his trash talking is crossing the line with a variety of officials. To me that means he is saying some awfully mean things when he is flagged or the officials have labeled and are targetting him as a troublemaker.

Love the way you play Anthony, but cool it with the jaw-jacking. We bailed enough teams out of punting situations with stupid taunting penalties last year.

as long as he doesn't start his lame dance routines and stupid penalties he might become a good safety.

act like you have made a play before. also, remember it's a team game, not a personal show.

I gotta say this...

I love the mean streak that we are starting to pick up in our guys...

Willie Colon, Silverback, A. Smith.

A couple more like that, and we may have the attitude of the 70's team, if not quite the talent.
