Default Ruling on local band's guitarist's death could take months

The cause of death for Casey Calvert, a guitarist with the popular Dayton-based rock band Hawthorne Heights, may not be known for 90 days, a spokeswoman with the chief medical examiner's office in Washington, D.C., said Monday.

Calvert, a native of Middletown, died Saturday in Washington while on tour with his band. He was 26.

According to Washington police, emergency personnel responding to an afternoon call at Nightclub 9:30 ? where Hawthorne Heights was to perform that evening ? "found an individual unresponsive and unconscious" on the tour bus, Officer Junis Fletcher said Monday.

A medical examiner pronounced Calvert dead at the scene.

An autopsy, which likely will be performed this week, will determine whether the cause was natural or

"if we have a crime," Fletcher

said. "We're in a holding pattern until then."

The death has been classified as "a nonhomicide," Sharlene Williams, spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office, said. "It's a case where they're going to have to run some tests."

Calvert's death has left his family reeling. His wife, Ashley, teaches ninth- and 10th-grade English at Talawanda High School in Oxford.

"He was a kid at heart," she said of her husband, who had two years toward a degree in special education at Miami University before Hawthorne Heights got its national recording contract.

News of his death prompted a flood of fan tributes and condolences on Internet sites and message boards.

Calvert's bandmates ? JT Woodruff (vocals, guitar), Micah Carli (guitar), Matt Ridenour (bass) and Eron Bucciarelli (drums) ? canceled the remainder of their 28-date national tour and returned home Sunday, Kelle Carli, wife of guitarist Micah Carli, said Monday.

The band is devastated by the loss of "a brother," she said.

Funeral arrangements, which are pending, will be handled by Wilson Schramm Spaulding Funeral Home in Middletown.

Guitarist will be sorely missed

DAYTON ? Casey Calvert collected toys and loved the Peanuts Christmas album.

He enjoyed filmmaker Tim Burton's "Nightmare Before Christmas" so much, he got tattoos of images from the animated movie. And he was thrilled, said his wife, Ashley, when she took him to a 3-D screening of the film for his 26th birthday on Oct. 20.

Calvert's kidlike personality and often zany take on life make the musician's sudden death Saturday, while on tour with the Dayton-based post-punk band Hawthorne Heights, all the more unfathomable for his family, friends and legions of fans. Found unconscious on the tour bus by his bandmates, Calvert's cause of death remains undetermined.

His wife said he was looking forward to the new year, when his sister, Cory Calvert, is due to give birth to a baby girl. "He was really excited that he was going to be an uncle," she said. "He just loved little kids."

That love prompted him to pursue a degree in special education at Miami University, until musical fame came calling in 2003 with a national recording contract for Hawthorne Heights.

He was the band member who made everyone else laugh, said Kelle Carli, wife of the group's lead guitarist, Micah Carli. "He (was) always just hilarious," she said.

Calvert's amiability made him approachable and well-liked by the band's fans, many of whom expressed shock and grief on a variety of Internet sites and message boards as word of the tragedy spread Sunday and Monday.

By early Monday evening, more than 1,100 MySpace users had posted "kudos," indicating support, on the Hawthorne Heights page.

A message-board user at punknews.org wrote: "regardless of what you say about their music, this is a band of really good guys, and he was among the best of them. He'll be sorely missed by anyone and everyone who knew him. RIP dude, if there's a heaven I know you'll be up there jammin with the best of them."

I know Hawthorne Heights was considered an "Emo band" and all that, but I still enjoyed some of their stuff. RIP, dude.
