Default 4 Steelers players subpoenaed in bar case

Four Steelers players subpoenaed in bar case
Saturday, December 01, 2007
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Four Steelers players were served subpoenas this morning in connection with activities at a South Side sports bar in which their teammate Hines Ward has a financial interest.

Casey Hampton, Deshea Townsend, Nate Washington and Ike Taylor were served subpoenas at the Steelers practice facility, according to attorney Mark A. Bartholomaei.

Mr. Ward and another co-owner of a South Side sports bar previously were ordered to repay more than $170,000 to the business, which is being managed by a court-appointed receiver.

The payment to the Locker Room Bar & Grille includes $48,438 that was used to purchase two cars given to high school friends of Mr. Ward. That money is be repaid by Mr. Ward. The remaining $122,000 must be repaid by Korry Pitts, Mr. Ward's partner.

That decision by Common Pleas Court Judge Christine Ward came after Nicholas A. Lettieri Jr., a third co-owner and the bar's former manager, alleged that nearly $1 million of the bar's money was unaccounted for, including $350,000 defrauded from an insurance company.

Judge Ward named Downtown attorney David K. Rudov to oversee the bar's operations. Mr. Rudov must file a report on the business' financial condition within 45 days.

In court papers, Mr. Lettieri accused Mr. Pitts and his wife, Kimberly, of creating a secret account at Dollar Bank, using their home as the address for the account. Ms. Pitts wrote checks on the account to purchase a 2007 Dodge Charger and a 2007 Ford Expedition, he said. High school friends of Mr. Ward were listed as owners of the vehicles, Mr. Lettieri stated in court papers.

Uh-oh! For two reasons;

1.) Here come the Patsie's fans to gloat.
2.) Does this mean that this is all we're going to hear about from the commentators in Sunday's game, like they did about the pothead in the Miami game?

What's to gloat about? Huge difference between being served subpoenas in a civil case and being served with arrest warrants. This is simply a dispute over money and eventually it will get cleared up when Hines breaks out the ol' checkbook and pays up.

Compared to the complete lack of class and dignity that Patriots organization has shown this year, this is nothing.

Our history speaks for itself when it comes to how we handle players when they get in trouble and the class our organization exudes.

Grand jury subpoenas are a big deal

As stated above, all you need to issue a civil subpoena for a deposition is a civil lawsuit.

Showboating by the attorney to serve them at practice. A call to the Steelers organization would have worked out acceptance of service.

Another minor example of why even attorneys think some of their fellow members of the bar are jerks.

Sounds like Ward is being muscled to help get this case settled.

The lawyer for a man who co-owns a South Side bar with Super Bowl XL MVP Hines Ward, said the players will be questioned about "activities that happened at the bar that were detriment of the bar."

Attorney Mark Bartholomaei added that information will come out at the depositions.

Check out the link to the attorney - he may be a bright guy but he also looks like a young lawyer (Pitt 2000 grad) trolling for pub - he may find out attempting to push on th Steelers may not be the best way to go about that if you want to practice in Pittsburgh

+1

It's amazing how people don't actually read about the subject they are giving their expert opinion on.

We are all guilty of it at one time or another though.
