Default 2008 Salary Cap Hits

there are some big cap hits come 2008(estimates). BR is the only one i can see being re-signed for a bigger contract. the others will most likely play out their contracts here and move on.

hampton - $5,543,750

polamalu - $5,161,450

m. smith - $6,645,500

ward - $7,450,000(biggest cap hit on roster)

aa. smith - $4,750,000

taylor - $5,740,000

farrior - $4,498,750

roethlisberger - $5,576,500

keisel is an interesting one because of the amount that can be saved by cutting him after 06/01/08

keisel - $4,072,500 - if cut after 06/01 he will only cost $822,500 against the cap for a savings of $3,250,000. if ward was cut it would be savings of $5,450,000 after 06/01. if ward was cut a sum of $2,000,000 would be dead money.

now for the pinheads who are going to say "we aren't cutting them" or "why do you want keisel cut", relax. i am not saying i want the steelers to cut anyone in particular. it's just a post made in my spare time. some of those cap hits are justified and some are a little much, IMO. you can't really cut anyone without having dead money as a result.

Thanks for the info - Hines has had a solid year but IMO he renegotiates or is gone

A lot of cap money can be moved around for a bonus + a new deal where the back end money will never be paid (e.g. - I never thought the 4th year of Ward's contract would be paid out as structured and saw his 2005 signing as a 3 year deal)

The 800 pound gorilla is what Ben's new # will be

Good information and thanks..
Now, I dont see Hines Ward going anywhere in the offseason myself, but maybe I am wrong. Hines has lost nothing and he is an awesome leader and a great teammate I bet. I think that the Steelers should give him what he is worth and should be loyal to him, and I also think in return he should be to them as well. I am sure they all will do the right things... I am sure that the Steelers are gonna have a decision to make with Farrior in the very near future as well. He is not very young and we have draft picks waiting in the wings to replace him. I would think that Troy had signed his last contract and now I am almost certain after all the injuries the last 2 years..

Ask Alan Faneca how getting paid what you think you are worth works with the Steelers

Well, the Steelers have never been overly huge in keepin people that want a lot of money. They have almost always been able to replace them with younger, less expensive personell. But troy would be a hard one to replace, even if hes been injured. And he isnt having the standout year we would expect, but the opposing offense runs their entire gameplan on taking him out of the play.

Agreed, I don't want to see Polamalu anywhere else - too dangerous to let him go to another team.

I can't see Hines leaving. He seems dedicated to the franchise... but you never really know.

Marvel Smith, Cedrick Wilson, and Batch are among the FAs after 2008

Barring injury, Ben, Miller, Sepulveda, and maybe Harrison stay from that 2010 class - lots of those players will be played out by that time
